 | News Comment | Southampton Look For Another Home Draw In FA Cup 5th Round at 15:08:14
Went to every game in 76 cup run drawing Bradford away in the 6th round was lucky, horrible trip in a mini bus with no heating plus police on horseback on the terraces after a stabbing! Yes this was 50 years ago but all worth the Jim McCalliog goal set up by Peter Osgood. Crystal Palace at Stamford Bridge with fond thoughts of their manager Malcom Allison and his big ferdora hat in the semi was also lucky as the other two in the semi finals were United and Derby both first division sides Happy Days. Would be great for some of the younger fans to experience this but alas the FA Cup is not the competition it was but here’s hoping. |
 | News Comment | Southampton At Leicester City The Verdict at 18:01:11
All spot on comments. The manager got his selection wrong but to his credit he took off the 3 players that needed replacing especially Yander who was dreadful. I seen many comebacks over the years but this was right up there. I hope the manager sticks with a big man up front as we do not function as well with an Archer type no 9. I have some sympathy for Archer but he appears to very low on confidence and probably needs a fresh start elsewhere |
 | News Comment | Southampton V Watford The Verdict at 19:58:57
Winning ugly is part of any season and I know we all love good performance but it’s 3 more points. The defence is so much better without Wood and Manning and although not his greatest fan let us praise Stephens for another strong performance. We all have opinions but not picking Wellington until recently beggars belief and really makes me wonder how the manager has continued to overlooked him or was there other factors that we are unaware of?? I also thought Endoze looked very sharp and could enhance our progress for the remainder of the season Bring on Leicester |
 | News Comment | Southampton At Stoke City The Verdict at 18:16:19
This was so much better. A lot of strong performances Harwood Bellis, Downes, Yander, Aziz and Fellows. Special praise to Wellington who was my man of the match. Also a very strong performance from Stephens who like many is not top of pick list, as you have Nick one of his much better days and long may it continue, The team seen to flow and although Stewart wasn’t great it was far better than recent outings. Does make you wonder what lurks in the dressing room and the absence of Armstrong. SR get that new striker in ASAP. Onwards and hopefully upwards. |
 | News Comment | Tonda Eckert Talks About Potential Incoming Transfers Before Deadline Day at 17:04:16
I have no enthusiasm in respect of our beloved club and potential incoming players. We have a tiny South Coast neighbour with gates of 11,000 who sell Solanke for 65 million and buy Evanison for 40 million can anyone tell me if even in the good days we did that. We support a bargain basement club and until we are owned by farsighted owners we must get used to consistent disappointment |
 | News Comment | Southampton Linked With No One In Final Days Of Transfer Window at 15:12:10
Let nobody be surprised it may change but I very much doubt it. My gut feeling is Sports Repubic have spent money and are not prepared to risk any further investment. Looks like they intend to limp through this nothing season with this below par underperforming group. Link with no one sums everything up and we are daft enough(including me) to endure this. |
 | News Comment | Southampton At Portsmouth The Verdict at 20:31:18
I thought the referee was excellent and allow a football match to flow and not allow the usual stop go we all have to endure. We lost our way with the subs who fail to make the impact we needed and hung on towards the end. The balance of the side looked much better with both fullbacks in the main doing what defenders do. Sports Republic need to sign a strong left sided centre back who can actually win headers for us to move on. We need to move on from Wood, Manning and probably Stephens. |
 | News Comment | Southampton V Sheffield United The Verdict at 17:36:52
Well a back 4. Finally this Manager has seen the light and long may it continue. What a difference proper defenders like Wellington make. His selection has been long verdure. Having a target man like Stewart will always gives team outlets and change our predictable pattern of play. In the championship a team needs all players showing energy and grit and although Azaz is creative his work rate is poor and don’t start me off with the miss which would have given us breathing space. I like a good number of supporters have been very negative of late which is born out of total frustration. I sincerely hope this is a turning point. Finally SR make a couple of signings that could make a difference and I don’t mean peanut money!! |
 | News Comment | The Daily Echo Hints At Where The Problems Are In Saints Dressing Room at 16:30:14
All the rumours that are surfacing should come as no surprise to any of us. The dressing room scenario and who controls who plays just about sums up our distaste for the running of our club. Southampton Football Club is purely a business and not based on any thought for loyal supporters as the multi club model does not include any real basis for us working boys and girls who pay out our hard earned money each season or on a match my match basis. I decided that although I have paid for a season ticket and will sign up next season absence I hope makes the heart grow fonder and with luck by the Summer the owners will have moved on to their next disaster God willing!!!!! |
 | News Comment | Southampton V Hull City The Verdict at 14:31:14
Pitiful from a bunch of players (with a few exception)who are dishonouring the Southampton shirt week in week out. The So called Manager is now proving he is out of his depth and his support team would be quite at home in League 2 or playing Eastleigh and Aldershot as the local derbys. After supporting my only team for 72 years enough is enough Sports Republic thanks for absolutely nothing. Sporting Director and Manager along with the Russell Martin (you know who you are) Tippy Tappy brigade please leave goodbyes are not necessary. |
 | News Comment | Southampton V Hull City The Preview at 18:31:43
I have always felt that overall your comments and observations were reasonable in the main but to put Manning as a first choice full back or wing back is quite frankly totally wrong and out of step with the vast majority of supporters. To have a strong view after one game of the new goalkeeper is premature. You may be right but let us take a breath and hope this works out. There has also been a lot of discussions recently of multiple club ownership and sporting directors and regrettably our club falls very strongly in this category which based on their poundshop menatality I hold no real expectations for this season and with Hull missing a large number of their first team squad can we hope for a result tomorrow?? |
 | News Comment | West Ham Open To Offers For James Ward Prowse Will Southampton Pounce. at 18:23:42
Like many contributors it has to be a no. Returning to your former glories and eye catching free kicks will no doubt taint us with rose coloured glasses but I would have to go back to Mike Channon return in 1979 to find a success. Remember loyalty works both ways and like Ings, Ward Prowse chased the dollar. Like him a lot as an individual but that ship has sailed |
 | News Comment | Southampton At Doncaster Rovers The Verdict at 10:47:47
I am not a fan of any of the current goalkeepers and the jury will be out on the new addition so I believe a wait and see policy is best at the moment. The real issue is our terrible back 4 or 5 who just cannot defend. We need a decent right back as I have little faith in the 2 so called Danish internationals plus Wood, Stephens and Manning are unreliable.i also thought Quasie was terrible against Doncaster. Buy a left sided centre half with leadership qualities give Wellington a chance as an out and out left back, bring Bree back and play a back four. Play Fellows where he should be hope Stewart remains fit I am also worried about the drop in form of Yander, Robinson and Scienza which were the really bright spots in another mundane season.Getting shot of Edwards why? As most so called amateur pundits I probably have it all wrong time will tell |
 | News Comment | RIP Martin Chivers A Southampton FC Legend at 20:08:04
Great player. Prior to signing Ron Davies he was instrumental in helping us gain promotion to the top flight. Lovely memories of the run in 12 games unbeaten including a really special night at Brisbane Road and a draw that effectively sealed promotion. Beat Wolves 9-3 at the Dell which was unreal. Mind you we signed the Wolves goalkeeper Dave McClaren the following season typical Saints. His time at Tottenham where he improved no end, he was extremely quick for such a big man although the makeshift in the deal coming to Saints Frank Saul left a lot to be desired. RIP Martin. As a footnote best wishes to Kevin Keegan in his fight against the big C. |
 | News Comment | Supercomputer Predicts Southampton Going Up Portsmouth Going Down at 16:58:38
A pig just flew over my house. Saka & Rice have demanded a transfer to us as our owners are great. I could go on. What a complete load of crap and sorry Nick but you should not be giving this any type of airspace. Perhaps Eastleigh could make loan bids for Stephens and Manning in my ideal world so I see their work in progress |
 | News Comment | Daily Echo Hint At Player Power Issues In Southampton Squad at 12:56:11
For us older fans the rumour during Ted Bates time was that Painey picked the team. That was OK if there was any truth in the rumour as during Terry Paine’s time we did OK and he was worshipped by the majority of us. McMenemy decided 2 strong people would not work and as manager he was brave enough to do the unthinkable and offload him. Which was not popular. Two years later we won the cup. Cannot see anybody within Sports Republic or this inexperienced Manager being brave enough to deal with this alleged situation. I’m sure a Neil Warnock would know ho to deal with the tippy tappy lazy players who in my view are going a long way to destroying my beloved club. |
 | News Comment | Southampton At Middlesbrough The Verdict at 15:11:27
Well previous contributors have said it all. When Matt Targett left for Aston Villa he was a fringe member of the squad, he looked head and shoulders above anything we have which demonstrates how we have declined. I have witnessed the 8-0 thrashing by Everton and the well publicised 7-0 humiliation by Leeds this lot unlike previous Saints teams that dragged themselves back from the brink this poor excuse for a Southampton team look incapable of doing this. We looked for an experienced back up to this Manager and we get Simon Garner. Simon who I hear you all shout WHO? He must be cheap which appears the SR way. This Manager has not heeded the very strong noises about the lopped sided and system he persists in playing by the majority of supporters and he will pay the price as if continues with a number of individuals that are extremely poor and do not deserve to wear our shirt. You have been warned Eckert!! |
 | News Comment | Southampton V Millwall The Verdict at 20:47:56
So, according to Eckert this game was not rubbish! I have been on this planet over 40 years more than you Mr Manager and this was total garbage so please don’t treat us like we cannot identify entertainment to total dross. I watched both Oxford and Birmingham at home and pay tribute to the wonderful fans who travel (as I did many years ago) and persist in watching our team in extremely trying circumstances at great personal cost.Good on you all. I decided after watching these game should I endure 11,000 steps after parking my car as I approach nearing 80 and forgo my usual seat? I therefore decided to sit by the comfort of my home to watch the delights of Millwall. How right I was total bored. There are so many faults in the makeup and setup of this team that previous comments have made so I will be just going over old ground. Needless to say I ain’t happy |
 | News Comment | Two Key Areas That Southampton Need To Sort Out In The Transfer Window at 10:48:53
I agree on the Wood & Stephens scenario as they have not delivered after numerous opportunities, get rid. We will have differing opinions on what is needed in this transfer window. My main concern still concerns the lopsided balance of the team that the Manager persists with this which would resolve many of our needs in the transfer window. Please Mr Manager revert to 4 at the back with 4 defenders that can actually defend!!! New Central Defender with leadership qualities a tall striker who can hold the ball up would be my new year wish list. |
 | News Comment | Southampton At Birmingham City The Verdict at 20:36:37
When I saw the lineup I thought the Manager has decided regardless of the real concerns most supporters have “ I’m sticking with my best team”. I regret he is delusional. We all think we know better than him but the question is do Bazuna, Woods, Stephens, Manning and Aziz all warrant being given an automatic place in our team. Some may argue we do not have the backup players I suppose with this guy we may never know. He clearly does not rate the likes of Edwards so the concerns we have will not go away.. I keep banging about bringing in an experience guy in but this does not appear on SR agenda unless of course they have a cunning plan!!! |
