Swans Target Conlon To Join Barnsley

Swans Target To Join Tykes

The Tykes have won the race to sign the player that former manager Brian Flynn tried to sign before he was sacked from the Vetch back in March. Notts County were one of a few clubs reported to also be interested in a man, described by one third division coach as "The Poor Man's Kevin Nugent"

Conlon scored 14 goals last season in a struggling Darlington side and underwent a medical at Oakwell before signing on a free transfer. Notts County were thought to be the favourites for the striker after Quakers manager David Hodgson stated he had received a 'lucrative' offer from 'a club just about within commuting distance from his home in York' He also claimed that Conlon would love to stay at Darlington but had received an offer which they could not match.

Quakers assistant boss Martin Gray backed up his manager,, telling the Northern Echo: "Baz is one of the best strikers around at this level and I'm sure he will be a big miss. "He has all the tools and he now has an opportunity to prove himself in the Second Division. He's done extremely well for us and we all hope he goes on to do very well for himself. "It would have been nice to keep hold of Baz but I think everybody knows the situation we're in. Money talks and we weren't able to offer what others could."

Quite where the Swans attention will turn now is anyone's guess although chairman Huw Jenkins today told the Evening Post that Jackett has his eye on four or five players whom he would like to see join the club for next season. Jenkins also said that players were unlikely to commit at the moment and that 'one of two of them are useful' which in itself doesn't breed confidence and maybe we have another one of those situations that the words chosen to be spoken could have been better phrased to breed more confidence within the support.

Whether Conlon was one of those five is unlikely now as he looks to start the next two years of his career at Oakwell.
