Give It Up For Claus
Give It Up For Claus

Its time to remember a Saints legend.

He might have bought a new pitch for St Mary's but with only three days to go before his testimonial match, it looks like Saints fans are forgetting the massive contribution Claus Lundekvam made to Southampton FC.

Ticket sale for the game against Celtic on Friday are decidely slow, even up in Scotland only 2,500 of the 6,000 tickets available have been sold, meaning that unless there is a late surge on sales Claus could find himself substancially out of pocket on the evening.

In truth Im not a great lover of testimonials, I feel that in today's day and age, players make fortune's they do not need the money anymore, unlike the players of yesteryear who made a pittance in comparison, and to be blunt here I feel that since the late 70's players have earned more than the average man in the street and feel little sympathy for even those who have fallen on hard times, as they have had their money and if they have wasted it why should they have a second chance.

However in the case of Claus I am willing to make an exception and in all honestly I expect this to be the last testimonial that I go to at St Mary's, unless of course one of our players has their career ended by tragic injury or some such.

But the facts of this situation are that Claus Lundekvam is the last of a dying breed, a player that has remained loyal to the club over a long period and hasnt benefited from huge signing on fee's that accompany transfers in this day and age, he has given us good service as well, being a regular under 9 different managers in over 400 games.

I dont buy the excuse trotted out by some Saints fans, that he has had his reward from the club in that he was well paid last season for sitting in the treatment room, one thing you could never accuse Claus of was not getting stuck in when he could be hurt, he didnt ask to be injured and if we had had him last season we wouldnt have had the struggle that we ended up having.

So come on, get your money out and honour the last of Saints great legends, he might not have been local like Benali, or as skilful as Le Tissier but he is an adopted son of this City, he deserves to see a big crowd on Friday evening.
