He joined Dale on a month's loan from Carlisle United having struggled to break into their first team during that season. He came to Spotland with a decent pedigree having won the Carlisle United Player of the Season award during 2001-2 as an 18 year old, but following an injury had fallen out of favour with Carlisle boss Roddy Collins, and had found first team opportunities limited as a result. He made his debut for Dale as right wing back in our first ever win at Leyton Orient, but he soon reverted to a more comfortable position on the right hand side of a central defensive back three in his next game. He made a total of eight games for Dale, the last of which came in our 3-3 draw with Rushden & Diamonds. After a slow start, he was praised for his pace and being comfortable on the ball, though he did give away a couple of penalties during his brief spell at Spotland. Despite talk from the North of a £25,000 permanent transfer to Spotland, he returned to Carlisle United at the end of his month at Rochdale.
