Butler Still Fumes Over Cardiff City Decision
Butler Still Fumes Over Cardiff City Decision

Tom Butler is still fuming over the penalty at Ninian Park - five days after the event

The Swansea City winger was sent off after the final whistle in Sunday's 2-2 derby draw - a result that left the Swans play off hopes hanging by a thread.

But rather than calming down in the five days since the game, the feelings of anger are still there as Butler told the Evening Post "Referees are human, ther are going to make mistakes.  But if they are unsure of something they have to give the benefit of the doubt and let it go.

"There's only so much they can do and I think decisions in the box are something referees really need assistance with.  How do you help them?

"It would take a panel of three referees watching  a video of the game that would take 15 seconds or less to make a decision on a potential penalty.

"Either that or you could have an assistant behind each goal so that they could identify whether someone has dived or if it was handball.

"I'm not saying it should happen for every game, but certainly for high profile games like cup finals and league games that have something huge riding on them.

"I just think if referees had a little more help and more assistance in and around the goal it would make their lives alot easier.

"It is an emotional game and it is hard to level it out through a game especially derby games like last Sunday.  The smotions are running high and I was buzzing for Joe Allen after he scored his first goal in such a big game.  THen a minute later that is turned on its head.

"I was upset and said some things to the ref that I thought at the time I was justified in saying.  I don't regret confronting the ref but my choice of words was probably poor a the time.  How can you control what you say when the stakes are so high?

"You want to hear what the ref has to say but he won't give you anything.  Even if I did have the right choice of words if the ref makes a mistake he doesn't have to answer back to the players.

"Some referees are fantastic.  They are professional and speak to you throughout the game.  Some referees are arrogant, rude and blank you.  They treat you like you aren't a person.  All you are doing is asking for an answer.

"It's those type of referees that are so hard to deal with.  Football is massive - games are so important particularly for us with the position we are in.  If a referee makes a wrong decision then there could be massive repercussions.

"They don't realise that people suffer a lot from it.  A team could go down because of a bad decision.  Then the players could lose their contracts and go to lower clubs that means their families suffer."
