Is Robbie Rogers starting to sound a bit like Dafydd?

Having initially been supportive of Robbie Rogers when he first "came out", I fear he is now becoming as repetitive as Dafydd, Matt Lucas's character from Little Britain. His latest outburst on Radio Five has left me somewhat baffled as Rogers says although English football fans are not homophobic they should be careful before they chant things?

Rogers came out as gay after his contract was terminated by Leeds, although he announced his retirement he has since returned to the game with LA Galaxy and has been outspoken in his views since.

Speaking to Victoria Derbyshire on Five Live on Monday, Rogers said Speaking to Victoria Derbyshire on BBC Radio 5 Live, Rogers said: “For whatever reason, I don’t think fans in England or fans in the UK are homophobic at all.

“They are just so passionate they will do anything to help their team get a little bit of an edge.

“The things they will say in a stadium does not reflect their character.

“But they take it just a little bit overboard sometimes. I learned that while I was in England.

“It’s a little bit sad. Fans need to realise what you’re saying to players, especially when you are on that level.

“You need to think it through before you start yelling at players.”

Surely he is contradicting himself, we are either being homophobic or not? I personally do not hear that much homophobic abuse from the stands. Ok the exception may be Brighton, but arent they being over sensitive as the "Does your boyfriend know you're here?" chants? ive heard plenty of stereotypical "Dirty Northern" chants down the years! I do have some sympathy with the argument that there may be players who refuse to come out because of the hatred and ridicule they may receive, however this surely is mirrored in every walk of life and is society wide not just confined to the beautiful game? Rogers also seemed to imply that had he came out whilst at Leeds, he feared an adverse dressing room reaction more than what we fans thought.

Not really since Justin Fashanu in 1990 has England seen a well-known footballer openly declare he was gay. Fashanu committed suicide in 1998. Arguably his brother John, the former Wimbledon and Aston Villa striker got even worse abuse than poor Justin? Rogers was asked if he thought a top-player would have the courage to come out? He said "I have no clue when someone will feel they can do that. I hope soon.

“I hope they can learn from my experience, if possible, to see that it wasn’t a big deal and that I’m playing football and just carrying on with my life.”

Surely the clue is in his last sentence? Are we really that bothered whether our heroes lust after supermodels or Superman in their spare time? we will always try and find something to wind up the opposition with. Most of them keep their private life to themselves anyway and have the added advantage of being able to protect it from the gutter-press by employing an army of injunction yielding lawyers.

I'm sorry Robbie, but it is time to face facts and move on. Irrespective of your sexual preferences, it had no bearing on the fact you couldn't even get into Stevenage's team never mind ours. I do not agree with your hope that if we look long and hard enough we will find England's first homosexual star player.
