Gung-ho Tigers defying pre-season odds – Oppo Profile
Thursday, 20th Nov 2025 11:51 by Clive Whittingham

A summer of managerial upheaval, financial chaos and transfer embargoes had many tipping Hull City for a season of struggle under unheralded Sergej Jakirović, but the free-scoring Tigers currently sit fifth in the table - @NathanielWhitto explains how it’s been done.

A tumultuous summer, smothered in transfer embargoes and financial uncertainty last time we spoke, how did that all play out in the end?

The situation is that we cannot spend any money for the summer just gone and January. If there's more delayed or missed payments we'll also be unable to buy anyone next summer as well. However, as we will get onto, things have calmed down a lot because of the results. Most if not all fans will say the embargo has actually helped a lot.

What summer business was done in the end around the restrictions?

Not to be discouraged by the fee restriction we still signed a lot of players - 16 in total including a few on deadline day as is now tradition. We strengthened every area of the pitch. If we had been able to spend money we would have wasted it on Croation striker Matija Frigan who, in his first training session for Parma, tore his ACL. Bullet dodged there. The signings of Oli McBurnie and the loan return of Joe Gelhardt mean we actually have a better squad than last year because we have a real goal threat. The embargo seemed to focus our efforts which have been very scattergun in recent years. Thank you EFL!

A bookie-defying very positive start to the season results wise, what have you made of it?

I'm delighted! For the first time in four years we actually have the exciting football owner Acun Ilicali has been looking for through the new manager's almost gung-ho approach. It started very mixed with some poor results in the first block of games but since the last international break we've been on a great run, one of the form teams in the league and that's been without the likes of McBurnie, Jon Lundstram and our two wingers Millar and Belloumi who got hamstring injuries. Predictable after their return from their ACL injuries.

Opinions on Sergej Jakirović?

As he says, I'm sure he is "buzzing" with how the first third of the season has gone. He's very likeable, more so than Selles who fans got a little annoyed with towards the end of the last season. He's thrown aside Selles' pragmatism which was required in a relegation battle. Opting to play and try to get the best out of Ryan Giles he's unlocked a lot more speed and creativity and the fullback now has the most assists in the league. The defence does absolutely need sorting out but honestly, after a grim 24/24, we're enjoying the ride. Every game is open and exciting and whilst we are on just on the right side of these scorelines I'm happy. He's done an incredible job to turn us into an attacking force and make the MKM stadium a tough visit for the first time in years for away teams.

What style of play has he adopted? What sort of Hull team shall we be facing this weekend?

As I've said it is open. We back ourselves to outscore the opposition, the complete opposite to Ruben Selles where we played for draws or one nils. The team is full of confidence at the moment and is playing some great intricate football but we're not a possession team. We have the most amount of accurate long balls in the division and pace on the counter with Giles and Gelhardt.

What restrictions are you under in January? What needs doing ideally?

We have a one out, one in policy based on a salary cap we're at enforced by the EFL. The owner wants a number ten in the last loan spot so I'm sure the injured Kasey Palmer will be on his way out to be able to bring someone in. There are rumours he wants Fabio Carvalho again. Dream on, I say. If we were able to bring more in a centre back or left back for cover would be good as Semi Ajayi will go away for AFCON.

Stand out players and weak links?

The weak link is the defence. Though Giles is top assister, Hughes is incredibly important in build up, Egan and Ajayi bring strength and experience and captain Coyle is much improved fitter than last year we still can't seem to keep a clean sheet. Ivor Pandur, player of the season last year, has had a dip of form in goal. The standout is player of the month nominee Joe Gelhardt who is playing the best football of his young career so far.

Revised expectations for the season?

Before the season is thought we'd finish low mid table with McBurnie helping add goals to a solid if unextraordinary squad. Now mid table looks like a minimum. Injuries especially over the winter period might stop us but I'm getting carried away. Dare to dream. In all seriousness the top ten finish the owner and manager mentioned would be a reasonable bet as I don't see us sustaining a playoff position with the thin squad and poor underlying numbers (21st in the xG table). Let's say 11th.

Thanks to Nathaniel.

It's strange to think that the embargo might have actually helped the club. In any case, it sounds like Jakirović has made the best of a bad situation.
