Weren't we fined for this once upon a time?
Weren't we fined for this once upon a time?

Whilst the debate rages should our dear friends from Manchester field a weakened side at Dull on Sunday, back in 1970 things were viewed a bit differently.

Back in 1970, Leeds under Don Revie were chasing a treble (FA Cup, League and European Cup) and on Easter Monday at Derby, the Don fielded a weakened side which crashed 4-1 at the Baseball Ground.

Revie was fined five grand for his team selection! This was despite the trip to Derby being the FOURTH game for Leeds in seven days with THREE further matches coming up in the following seven days - including a European Cup semi-final against Celtic at Hampden Park!

Outside of Leeds no-one rarely had an ounce of sympathy for Revie. Nearly forty years on, times have thankfully changed.

On Sunday, Premiership Champions Manchester United go to Hull in what is a critical game for the Tigers, who need a result to stay up. Seventy-Two hours later, there is the small matter of the Champions League final in Rome - no doubt most Leeds sports-shops have long since sold out of Barca tops!

The feeling is that Taggart is going to field a so-called weakened side (and possibly a fitness seeking Rio Ferdinand) which will give his stars a rest before Wednesday and supposedly Hull a massive advantage over the likes of Newcastle, Middlesbrough and possibly Sunderland.

Personally I predict that a team of Manchester United youths and reserves will still easily whip Hull and before you even suggest I see a psychiatrist, I believe Taggart has to do what is best for his own club!

Thankfully times have changed for the better, however with players supposedly being more fitter nowadays than ever before it does a make a mockery of the fixture pile-up Leeds faced all those years ago when it was a team rather than a squad game!
