Trump rubbishes Chagos deal 07:57 - Jan 20 with 4326 viewsAnotherJohn

The tone is awful, the content contradicts what Trump and Rubio said last year, but in the cold light of day it is hard to disagree about the Chagos aspect. Even a broken clock is right twice a day,

Thought they said they were happy with the deal at the time.

Games, games and more games.

Today from the BBC.

When Keir Starmer announced the UK had signed the deal on 22 May 2025, Starmer said: "President Trump has welcomed the deal along with other allies, because they see the strategic importance of this base and that we cannot cede the ground to others who would seek to do us harm."

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio also welcomed it, and issued a statement saying that Trump had "expressed his support for this monumental achievement".

Rubio said the deal "reflects the enduring strength of the US-UK relationship".

"We stand ready to continue our collaboration to promote peace, security, and prosperity in the Indian Ocean and beyond," he added.

At which point was he right? This time or last time?

I've said it before on here but sadly, the US with Trump in charge is no longer a UK ally.

He's losing his marbles.

He's right, there's nothing about the Chagos Deal that isn't idiotic, but to rant like this less than a year after his Government backed the deal just makes him look unhinged.

Trump seems to really enjoy humiliating Starmer. It was clear from the moment Labour sent hundreds of activists to campaign for Kamala Harris that it wouldn’t be forgotten or forgiven. The Chagos surrender is clearly one of the worst deals in the history of our nation and Starmer and everyone else involved needs to be called out on it as often as possible.

As for Greenland I don’t think even Trump is thick enough to take it by force. Purchasing it would be acceptable it could make the Greenlanders and Denmark very rich, I would ask how much he’s willing to pay then multiply it by 10. That’s the price. Pay up or you’re not having it.

The USA public given up on Trump. British people should not take crepe off ANY ONE. He will be gone sooner than people think. UK got Brexit to be free to do our own thing.

Give Trump and Vance a dressing down. That is what they expect of us. The public will just gave to accept the consequences of UK being leaders not followers. UK future US partners are currently prisoners of MAGA.

Make a stand and get the benefits down the line. The "poodle" needs to show it's teeth.

The problem is that Starmer hasn't got the gonads. He's a Lawyer after all, not a politician with a clear philosophy.

It seems to be all about appeasement with Starmer. I keep thinking about Chamberlain and that piece of paper. There comes a time when enough is enough and surely we have reached it.

But yes you’re right he has mastered the art of speaking for twenty minutes without actually saying anything.

It’s the complete blind devotion and subservience to these various pieces of international “law” that’s largely got us into the mess we are in in the first place.

The rules based international order has failed. It’s the countries who haven’t signed up for it or are willingly ignoring it that are winning.

My worry is that Europe has allowed itself to become so enfeebled, and is affected by so many internal divisions, that its power to act is very limited. I am uncertain what could be done if the USA simply moved troops into Greenland, It seems to me more likely that the US Congress itself might block annexation (as NATO rules are incorporated into US law) than that Europe could do anything other than express outrage. Similarly, if Trump's reaction to open criticism was to stop the flow of arms Europe is buying for Ukraine do we really have enough resources to hold the line against Russia in Ukraine?

To me, what recent developments show is the fragility, even fiction, of the kind of international law that Hermer and Starmer say is the key global governance mechanism. Treaty obligations mean little when the most powerful nations - Russia, China and the USA - opt out, and even countries like India, KSA and Brazil are equivocal. The backstop of "customary international law", which supporters of the "international rule-based order" will mention next, doesn't mean much if a powerful nation says it never recognised that custom (if so -called usus and juris are denied). It seems that the times they are a-changing.

As of this moment nothing's happened. Trump has said stupid things just like he says stupid things virtually every day.

He's said tariffs will start on 1st Feb if everyone doesn't bow down to him. By then he'll probably have gone off on a tangent any number of times in a completely different direction.

But if he does impose tariffs that's when KS should react. As should all the other countries affected.

Having said that, whatever does actually happen on 1st Feb, it's a fact of life now that we can't trust the man at all. And we can't trust Russia or China. The only countries we can trust are other European countries. And that's because we have shared interests.

So I welcome the fact that our government is deep in discussions with the EU (and the rest of Europe hopefully) to build stronger relationships in all areas, not just trade but also militarily.

If you think about the legal process, it is defined, there are clear procedures to follow and the skill is in the interpretation of the small details to make an argument. Compare that to running a country, everything is in motion, the situations are complex and not well defined, the skill is in identifying where you need to get to and having a strategic plan that pulls you in the general direction you need to go in, accepting that there will be hurdles and barriers to overcome.

Especially in Starmer’s human rights field. You don’t have to persuade a jury you only have to persuade a judge. You have weeks if not months to prepare your statements. You don’t have to think on your feet. It’s a completely different skill set and Starmer simply doesn’t have it.

Could his end game be stationing whatever troops the usa feel necessary to protect their and Europe's interest and getting mineral rights in Greenland to pay for it all i wonder

The deal done with Denmark in 1951 I understand pretty much gave the US carte blanche to put as many troops in Greenland as they like.

Not according to some on here.

The turn around is amazing from ‘Trump is stopping wars’ to him attacking or threatening to attack somewhere on a regular basis.

I bet Iceland is worried he keeps messing up them with Greenland. Biden quite rightly got pelters for his mental capacity yet Trump seems to be getting away with it.

'Trump rows back on Greenland tariff threats after ‘deal’ talks with Nato chief'.

I'd say Keir Starmer did the right thing. Don't you ?

There is a school of thought that suggests he does it deliberately as a tactic to keep everyone uncertain about what he wants. To bluster and demand far more than he's actually quite willing to accept.

That's probably giving him far more credit than he actually deserves, but I wouldn't be surprised if there was a grain of truth to it. Not much more than a grain mind.

A lot of people say this, but I don't think it is 100% accurate. The treaty gives the US the right to deploy defensive armaments but not offensive armaments, and as I understand things Denmark needs to be consulted. This is what Co-pilot says on this point:

--------

• Denmark retains full sovereignty over Greenland, and the U.S. explicitly recognized this in the agreement. Any military activity must align with Denmark’s policies and NATO’s defensive posture.
• Historically, Denmark has maintained strict control over what types of weapons systems may be stationed on its territory, including Greenland, and has consistently rejected the placement of offensive or nuclear weapons there.

-----
My guess is that Trump wants to widen the USA's absolute discretion about what type of weapons it can deploy, and to achieve this wants a sovereign base model along the lines of the UK base in Cyprus. Probably there will also be something about mineral rights in any agreement. The change in base status would give more latitude for the USA to decide on the range of technologies to be incorporated in "Golden Dome". So there may be an element of method in Trump's apparent madness.
