| New home kit 17:17 - Jul 3 with 33351 views | 442Dale | https://rochdaleafc.co.uk/26-2 As a football shirt, it's fine. It’s a really nice shade of blue for example. As a Rochdale shirt it is incredibly disappointing. We've spent nearly two decades building up a recognisable and unique look. This isn’t that. Dale are blue and black with white as a third colour (either as trim or shorts/socks). Some fans prefer black to be more prominent with stripes, others like a plainer shirt, but remaining consistent to the club's colours is vital to our identity and all important branding. Have a look at the scarves when the new manager and Cian Hayes arrived - blue and black with a bit of white. The back of the Sandy- blue and black walls. The images of the new training ground - blue and black. To make black such a token colour alongside red, which has no place on a Rochdale home shirt (sponsor’s own brand aside), has made our unique colour scheme no longer deserving of such recognition - we are the only club in the EFL who had blue, black and white as our home colours. A marketing opportunity that can be capitalised on constantly. In a new era which is looking to cover all the bases to maximise our potential, this is a misstep. When you've got such a unique brand, any dilution of that is a negative. Bit dramatic? Maybe. But are we going to start putting bits of red on all the merchandise and club ties too? Man Utd wear red/white/black. Would you see them add a random bit of blue to their home shirts? I'm sure those involved were doing their best, but there should always be a fan vote on shirts so that details like this can be identified and addressed as part of the process. Quite what the fascination is with the 93/94 chevrons is also hard to establish. Especially when we've already had an away kit utilising them and a retro shirt release. And if we had to use them, just make the chevrons blue and black. Our colours. If there is interest in older kits, we could have looked at past shirts from other seasons for inspiration - 92/93 & 99/00 immediately leap out. Unfortunately, because there isn't the knowledge or attention to detail required, what we've ended up with is something that could be mistaken for any team who wear blue and white (or it being a Glasgow Rangers shirt). There's little Rochdale about it apart from the badge and the local company sponsor. Picky? Probably. That won't change the fact it's disappointing. And a situation that was very avoidable. Presumably there will have been research into previous sales figures around change colours that have sold well. This will have helped to determine the choice. [Post edited 23 Jul 17:22]

I believe they accidentally leaked it on Instagram at the same time as the home kit. If that's true, it's a pink with a sort of silver/metallic badge? It's nice though!
| New home kit on 12:11 - Jul 24 with 3616 views | sxdale | Have to say I really like that kit. Like the pink and black detailing on the collar and cuffs, the black badge and the sponsors being in black. Will be buying this one. | | | |
| New home kit on 12:17 - Jul 24 with 3590 views | 442Dale | How many pink shirts did we sell in 18/19 and 19/20? If the answer to this question justifies having another pink away shirt, that’s a good indication there is structured planning into choosing change colours. As a shirt, much like the home version, it’s fine and I like they’ve tried something different with the badge to make it fit in better. General thoughts are it would be better as a third kit as little link to the club’s identity - two trim colours could have been blue and black. Hoping the shorts are black (with only white trim so they can be worn with the home shirt. Those paying attention will work that out…), all pink kits rarely work and need breaking up with a darker colour - see Carlisle’s new away strip. Last season the home and away shirts had similar design traits with the collars and cuffs following on across the strips. Having two completely different looks is something else that should be addressed during the process, it’s whether there’s any focus on the subliminal details that create attachment to shirts. Aside from that, connoisseurs of late ‘80s tag team wrestling will be happy that the Hart Foundation will now be represented at L2 grounds around the country in the coming months. | |

| New home kit on 13:03 - Jul 24 with 3440 views | EllDale | I think I’ll wait to see the third kit. Or the goalkeeper shirt. Would probably have tempted into buying the yellow goalkeepers shirt last year but, having initially been advised that it would be available in September it didn’t appear until February when it was linked to a tribute to Oli Whatmuff which was a bit too late with only three months of the season left. | | | |
| New home kit on 16:20 - Jul 24 with 3187 views | Cedar_Room | Away shirt is better than the home one, but still wouldn’t say it was good. Totally different design to the home kit and has even less connection to Rochdale colour scheme. It might have been fine if it was the home kit just in pink, that might have made it seem at least consistent. As it is - two really poor offerings as far as I’m concerned. Was hoping to buy my son a shirt after the game at Wembley got him excited about the Dale, but neither of us like either shirt so will be giving it a miss. | | | |

There is a picture of the goalkeeper shirt from when we signed the lad from Brighton, it's quite nice.

The orange version Waller is wearing on the story about him signing is the best shirt we’ve seen for the coming season. It’s even got the black badge. Wish it was the away kit.

The away kit design, especially the collar, is far better than the home kit Better if the home kit had followed that same design, for consistency

Agreed and it’s bizarre that consistency existed last season but it’s now been a case of ‘throw loads of different ideas together’ that don’t tell any particular story. Especially not one where the book is based on the club. Nor is this a difficult process to get right. Even when not all fans will like a particular shirt, they’ll at least understand it.

| New home kit on 18:38 - Jul 24 with 2833 views | Trev | It's pink and made by O'Neills so, yeah, it's low quality rubbish. Not sure why people think they're needs to be consistency between home and away designs though? Surely better to have different designs from a commercial POV. | | | |

It's actually quite simple Use different colour schemes for home/away/third kit, but keep the same design features. There are several reasons for this, including a more straightforward process, being able to identify the season by the design, club identify around logos... I'm beginning to sound like 442 here (not necessarily a bad thing) but i'd put the question back to you - Trev: why wouldn't you keep the same design, with colour variance? [Post edited 24 Jul 18:54]

Last season’s home and away kits reflect a good example of this. One was a solid block of colour, the other striped - within that there were consistencies in some of the design features that created a subliminal message that these were two strips that worked with each other. The shorts of the away kit could and were worn with the home shirt. Going back a season further, the shorts again all had the same design which meant they could be mixed and matched across the kits. Going back even further than that in the wider game, it’s something Man Utd always did really well during their time with Adidas in the 80s. You don’t have to do it, but it reflects that there’s thought being given to the kits being part of an overall look which reflects across the whole club.

It was a genuine question by the way, I think the importance of it is being overstated but that's just my opinion. Saying that I haven't bought a football shirt in years and even longer since I was a full kit winker, so what do I know? In answer to your question, though, I would suggest the idea would be the average shirt buying fan might like at least one of the designs and therefore be more likely to spend money. Perhaps they realised the home kit curly colour wasn't a good look? I've genuinely always thought it was lazy when clubs release home & away kits with the same design and different colour schemes.

Fair enough, and fwiw, i haven't bought Dale kit for a very long time - no reason, except it's just not me You raise a good point about variation in design. I don't know when the design for the away kit was finalised, but if it was after the feedback on here (and perhaps elsewhere) following the release of the home kit, that could explain why it differs Talking about consistency... there should be a recognised process within the club, and with fan involvement via the Club Board, then we'd all understand where the designs were coming from It's the lack of transparency, and apparent arbitrary nature of the process that can cause friction; and with the vast majority of other aspects of the club heading in the right direction, the opportunity to take this on board shouldn't be dismissed

The kit designs are agreed on months in advance and this particular pink kit was accidentally leaked on Instagram a few weeks ago, around the time the home kit was launched. I know the CAB were sort of involved in the kits, although I don't know to what extent. It will be in their minutes somewhere (even as far back as January, possibly); some posters on here will have more accurate information. [Post edited 24 Jul 20:20]

I often wonder if it's just a case of the kit provider contacting the retail manager at the time and sending over a few ideas, that's about it. I don't know much about kit designs but the striped home kits always looked very smart, blue and black and also the black and white with a bit of a blue trim. Both a bit unique and classic looking The fact the shirt has now incorporated red into it indicates that the decisions around the kit design was drawn from a very small pool of people, maybe even one. I don't know one Dale fan who would come to that the decision but it needs to be remembered that not everybody who works at the club is primarily a Dale fan and some are more open minded to colour change. The pink away shirt seems well received though. The home shirt reminds me of Oldham and Stockport shirts from decades ago. Hopefully all the shirts sell well. [Post edited 25 Jul 10:40]

The introduction of red into the design is very perplexing, as is the repeated use of chevrons because they were apparently popular over 30 years ago. Well so were the Spice Girls, but I don't see them making a comeback!

| New home kit on 21:56 - Jul 14 by 442Dale | After tonight at FCUM, have to say the kit plays so poorly. By that, it’s that it could have been any team wearing blue. Gillingham, Oldham or Carlisle could have been playing in New Moston this evening. Also the shirts look too baggy and the collars curl up visibly. This was noticeable on the few fans wearing them and on some players who appeared to be messing with them mid-game. If the club media team think it’s clever having graphics on Twitter that carry a border like the collar, maybe it’s because they want a move to Old Trafford at some point. |
Ironically FC United, who also have kits supplied by O’Neills, have got rid of the polo collars on their home shirts and now have a different design which is the exact same as the one we had on our home shirt last season. Players not happy apparently…
