| New home kit 17:17 - Jul 3 with 33090 views | 442Dale | https://rochdaleafc.co.uk/26-2 As a football shirt, it's fine. It’s a really nice shade of blue for example. As a Rochdale shirt it is incredibly disappointing. We've spent nearly two decades building up a recognisable and unique look. This isn’t that. Dale are blue and black with white as a third colour (either as trim or shorts/socks). Some fans prefer black to be more prominent with stripes, others like a plainer shirt, but remaining consistent to the club's colours is vital to our identity and all important branding. Have a look at the scarves when the new manager and Cian Hayes arrived - blue and black with a bit of white. The back of the Sandy- blue and black walls. The images of the new training ground - blue and black. To make black such a token colour alongside red, which has no place on a Rochdale home shirt (sponsor’s own brand aside), has made our unique colour scheme no longer deserving of such recognition - we are the only club in the EFL who had blue, black and white as our home colours. A marketing opportunity that can be capitalised on constantly. In a new era which is looking to cover all the bases to maximise our potential, this is a misstep. When you've got such a unique brand, any dilution of that is a negative. Bit dramatic? Maybe. But are we going to start putting bits of red on all the merchandise and club ties too? Man Utd wear red/white/black. Would you see them add a random bit of blue to their home shirts? I'm sure those involved were doing their best, but there should always be a fan vote on shirts so that details like this can be identified and addressed as part of the process. Quite what the fascination is with the 93/94 chevrons is also hard to establish. Especially when we've already had an away kit utilising them and a retro shirt release. And if we had to use them, just make the chevrons blue and black. Our colours. If there is interest in older kits, we could have looked at past shirts from other seasons for inspiration - 92/93 & 99/00 immediately leap out. Unfortunately, because there isn't the knowledge or attention to detail required, what we've ended up with is something that could be mistaken for any team who wear blue and white (or it being a Glasgow Rangers shirt). There's little Rochdale about it apart from the badge and the local company sponsor. Picky? Probably. That won't change the fact it's disappointing. And a situation that was very avoidable. | New home kit on 08:05 - Jul 6 by 442Dale | Until now, since 2008, our home colours have been blue/black/white every season bar one (as noted above). That is evidence of consistency. There has most definitely been an adherence to that colour scheme and brand. As TVOS has pointed out on various occasions, there was never any statement that those colours always had to be worn as stripes. |
I think you're confusing brand and colour scheme, similar to the packaging v product fallacy. Stripes are not a bone of contention for me, only a point of reference to the first change, post-Centenary.

Brand/identity/however anyone wants to label it, we have had a consistent colour scheme for our home kit over the last two decades. It is illustrated in things like scarves, hats, club ties and now on the images of the new training ground. If anything we haven’t made enough of that uniqueness, as has been discussed on here many times. To now move away from it without explanation is baffling.

The person who has agreed on the inclusion of red in the home shirt is somebody who has done that out of personal preference with no consideration of anything else. If that's not the case and it's been derived at after a group discussion then that makes the decision even worse. It might seem trivial to some but when the aim of the game is to sell the product to a target audience then it's a bit stupid to not even consult with them. As TVOS pointed out, the branding for the new training complex doesn't include red and i'm not aware of the colour being used in and around the stadium over the Summer during the recent renovation work and fan volunteering. To my mind we have somebody who has great knowledge and takes a very keen interest in kits in the fan base and that's 442 who post on here, he should be involved every season and it always surprises me why that is never tapped into during the decision making process. Red on a Dale home shirt ( sponsorship logo apart) is something no Dale fan would ever be happy with, everybody knows that. I'm now assuming red will be the predominant colour of our away or third kit. Will red also be included on the leasure wear? [Post edited 6 Jul 12:09]

Begs the question: is there an opportunity to be involved via CAB, which was set up for this kind of purpose and has been mooted as being involved in the new kit choice If so, opportunities are there to be taken up... [Post edited 6 Jul 12:15]

Agree that 442 should definitely be enlisted by the club for input on kits, be it through the CAB or independently. There's too much knowledge and experience there to ignore.
| New home kit on 12:32 - Jul 6 with 4389 views | 442Dale | I appreciate the words and would be happy to work with the club/CAB on this but at the same time that opportunity could be put out to all fans. Everyone’s opinion matters and to get a decent representation (whilst acknowledging that a certain level of knowledge and attention to detail is important). Could someone involved in the club/CAB taken this on and set up a meeting? Yes. Invite interested parties, take forward any outcomes to include in the process. The CAB was, I think, made up of different supporters from different stands/representing different groups. They could look to be inclusive of those they represent by collating views and/or setting up routes to find out how people feel. For example, Judd has posted on here asking for any matters that want raising at meetings. It’s really easy to sort. At the moment though, we are unsure who was included in the decision making process and what the reasons are for the changes made to the kit. Once that changes, we can then establish how to overcome the issues in the future. | |

But they don't 'represent' any fan (Judd's excellent consultations on here not withstanding) - they aren't elected by fans they are appointed by the Club; surely collecting & collating views is the Trust's role? They could set up a wider fans meeting for those interested (as 442 generously suggests) to advise the CAB/Club.

| New home kit on 15:40 - Jul 6 with 3996 views | Bainesy15 | I really like it. I can see the appeal of going back to blue and black stripes and personally would have preferred it, but this kit seems to be a more modern version of the 95/96 retro kit they brought back as a limited edition a few seasons ago - hence the red chevrons. I agree it could easily be an Oldham/Carlisle/A N Other kit but I still really like it. | | | |

They could have gone the whole way and had a blue shirt with black and white chevrons to completely mirror that kit. There are no guarantees, but would hazard a very good guess it would sell very well. Same as if we’d reimagined the 92/93 shirt. Fact is, they haven’t even been bothered to mention what the chevrons are a nod to! If you’re going to do something with a football shirt, make it make sense.

This states they are “fab representative roles”: https://rochdaleafc.co.uk/cab- Now it doesn’t strictly say how they should represent those various groups/stands etc, it would make sense for anyone involved to try and find the best way to represent their peers. This could include the club asking them to try and establish where other supporters can help. Unfortunately for the Trust, the ball would be in their court for them to illustrate they want to change opinion and take actions as you stated. I don’t necessarily disagree that’s exactly what they should be doing.

The retro shirt from a few years ago was a replica of the 1993/94 top, not 1995/96. It wasn't worn by the players, either, nor touted as the team's shirt. The shirt in 1995/96 was a lazy rip-off of the 1993/94 shirt, with a different collar added. The new shirt looks nothing like it either. See here: https://www.historicalkits.co. It's fine to like the new shirts - after all, it's always going to be subjective - but the fact remains it has deviated away from the two main colours the club have wanted to use as their identity since 2008 (and which so much else at the ground/new training hub revolves around) and introduced another colour; and at that, a colour which shouldn't really be involved on the design of a Rochdale home shirt (sponsor's logo excepted).

Don't like the sleeve trims and a collar personally. Just the chevrons trying to look bling or jazzy. Too much. I will still get one though , but maybe end up down at the bottom of my Dale clothes drawer. [Post edited 7 Jul 1:00]

There's some crackers on that historical kits site. The Ribero A&M Smith one from 90-91 was my first. I'd love to see a reissue of the adidas trefoil 79-80 shirt - has anyone still got one and can share a pic?
| New home kit on 19:29 - Jul 7 with 3162 views | davidab2202 | Just watching the Argentinian celebrations and thinking how good the Dale home shirt might look with a steal on the Argentine training shirts. Obviously with a darker blue than they have. | | | |
| New home kit on 21:56 - Jul 14 with 2556 views | 442Dale | After tonight at FCUM, have to say the kit plays so poorly. By that, it’s that it could have been any team wearing blue. Gillingham, Oldham or Carlisle could have been playing in New Moston this evening. Also the shirts look too baggy and the collars curl up visibly. This was noticeable on the few fans wearing them and on some players who appeared to be messing with them mid-game. If the club media team think it’s clever having graphics on Twitter that carry a border like the collar, maybe it’s because they want a move to Old Trafford at some point. | |

| New home kit on 18:22 - Jul 17 with 1621 views | 442Dale | So O’Neills, to their credit, have given some insight into the design. Which is more than the club bothered to do. However, on the inclusion of the chevrons we have been given the following information: “Classic knitted pattern reimagined from the 1995/96 home kit” That kit included white and red chevrons. Therefore the immediate change was to include black, which meant the design detail also didn’t need to include red. The “pattern” idea could have been retained. That 95/96 kit was “reimagined” from the one brought out in 93/94. It had a different collar and a different sponsor. O’Neills and the club should know this. They released a retro version of the 93/94 kit three years ago containing the original collar and sponsor. So if they are claiming it’s been reimagined in the collar this time around it’s a reimagination of a reimagination. Knowledge and detail. Make it make sense. | |
