As one supporter who hasn’t seen a single bit of the preseason action but keeping tabs on this message board it’s clear not many can predict the 11 come Saturday. However, based on what you have seen, how would you set up based on the formation Ian and Carl will opt for?
Really interested to see because from the dialogue to date I have zero clue who is likely to get the shirt in each position.
A side note, I don’t like the ‘free hit’ term but come 5:30 on Saturday we will be in a far more educated place ahead of the Newport encounter. Playing a game with something at stake changes everything. So I have every confidence we see a completely different approach and mentality to the game on Saturday. [Post edited 29 Jul 8:16]

I would have Gilmour in the 10 role off Mani with the option of swapping with East. Not ideal but not sure who else is suited to that position.
We have been too open with having one sitting midfielder and one pushing on. Whilst I would not want both Pettit and East to fully sit it offers a half way house to provide a bit more stability. Gilmour can offer work rate in that position, although I am not sure he has the attacking guile/goal scoring threat. We should be looking to feed our wide players as much as possible.
Another option would be to have Pettit sitting and play the other two midfielders left and right of him. | | | |

Not sure on formation, but the ones seen thus far in pre season don't bode well. I know its about fitness etc. but I was expecting last night with it being the final tune up before a competitive cup game vs Tranmere, to see his strongest/expected starting 11.

If Beckwith is injured (looked like that might be the case last night) then Sherring would come in at LCH and Billongo move the LB.
I think East can play that forward attacking midfielder role well, has an eye for goal and finds spaces.
Both EEL and Sherring (may not yet be fully match fit) are fairly slow so Moss and Hayes & Beckwith/Billongo and Silcott-Duberry have to be aware to cover for one another.
I would actually prefer a 3 - 1 - 4 - 2 formation.....

I agree. The team I listed will not be the team that starts. It is what I would do assuming the players I selected are available. We have a lack of pace in defence and have been caught on the break a lot. Having Wilson and Bilongo starting would hopefully go someway to addressing this concern.
As with Ramming I doubt Chelsea have loaded him out without the expectation that he is getting game time. From his profile on the Chelsea website:

I can't profess to be a week in week outer to games but probably do around 10 a season and came last night, for me if playing a 4-2-3-1 I would start:

Hayes, East, Silcott-Duberry
Mani D
However I think 3-4-2-1 still offers something with this set of players

Luke Hannant will be 33 in November and Mani D will be 32 in February.

EEL didn’t play alongside Perry in a back four.
When he played in a back four in the National League (the season Nevett was here) we conceded 64 goals.
The following two seasons when we played a back three with wingbacks, we conceded 44 and 41 goals.
Do I think EEL can play in a back four with two centre halves? Of course. Will he be as be as effective as he is in a three? Not one bit.
We’ve already heard that Watson will look at playing wingers rather than wingbacks. I’d sincerely hope that’s not set in stone if it turns out the players we have might benefit from changing formation on occasion.
For now there has to be a focus on gaining control of games. The players we have are suited to that, and would include new additions in that. The first thing that can be easily addressed is ensuring the fullback who isn’t pushing on gets closer to the centre halves leaving less gaps and, more importantly, we don’t empty midfield too quickly.
There has to be passing options on at all times, sometimes when we have gone forward it has been where too many players are ahead of the ball. One wrong pass and the control is lost and we’re being broke on.
On a related note, the lack of interviews with the manager where he discusses games, tactics and players has been very disappointing to say the least. It leads to a vacuum of uncertainty that is being filled with justified concerns and doubts of supporters commenting on what they’ve seen.
The club HAVE to do better on this front. If not, the longer term impact is one of a lack of understanding of what the manager and team are trying to do. Which is unfair on them and fans. |  |

Two different formations which would both be a move in a positive direction. Would try and get Moss in the side however we play at the moment, he’d be ahead of Sherring for me at present as the latter didn’t look match fit last night. Understandable as he won’t have had a full preseason. | |

It does seem foolish at the moment to have abandoned a formation that has done so well for us the last 2 seasons. Yes we lost Gordon but we still had EEL, Toby and Beckwith as a base to start with. East,Pettit and Gilmour as a solid midfield and Mani up top. Hopefully things improve this Saturday but we've had a disastrous pre season really. A clean sheet and a win seem a million miles away at the moment. | |

i can't recall a season where some of our fanbase are stricken with anxiety re the lack of signings, formation style of play before a ball has been kicked in anger.
For me its about where we are in 10 games time, cant see us getting past Tranmere tbh.
Just gotta trust the new management team and hope they have options on changing things if it goes somewhat pear shaped to start
We are heading into the great unknown, lets hope it doesn't get too bumpy.

Let's see where we are at Christmas and go from there. Oldham struggled a bit initially and then went on a good run in the new year before falling away a bit to miss out on the play offs.
Watson and the players will need time to adjust to a range of factors. Personally a lower mid table finish will be a decent achievement. We need to support the team and expect more fewer wins than last season. | | | |
