I posted elsewhere that he was mooching around outside the ground on Saturday. Some Tranmere fans were talking to him and believed he was joining them.

If he stay fit, it seems a really strong signing on paper. A passing glance online suggests he’s been highly thought of everywhere he’s gone, with injuries being the sole frustration during his time ar Gillingham. Very impressive highlight reel posted too.
I’m not sure what the plan is because as others have said, we now have 5 players who can occupy the wide roles (Hannant, Rodney, Hayes, Silcott-Duberry and Smith). If we go off last season’s general rule of 2 players per position I assume Rodney will be the one moving more central. Either way our winger options seem incredibly strong compared to last season- huge credit to the board and Watson for this. |  | | |

If you could accuse one thing about our ex gaffer Jim McNulty was that he never really encouraged anyone shooting from outside the box. Looking at some of Smith's goals it is certainly something he is good at and hopefully he is encouraged by our new manager. | |

The way he cuts in and curls shots in is reminiscent of Bobby Grant. He is also from Merseyside. Provided he doesn’t also mirror Bobby’s mentality this is a signing I really like. Bags of experience without being in the twilight of his career ( when you look at Hendo when does twilight start anyway). He must put in a shift to have had that many games under his belt. Don’t mind competition in wide areas, so nothing not to like for me. Devante is more of a channel runner / central layer in my eyes. Don’t know if he has been trialling with any one. If not he may take a few games to gain match fitness.
Wouldn’t mind an out and out right back and a centre forward on permanents. Then we can cover any shortages with loans like we did last year.

Would like to see a goal scorer / poacher if possible. Also a No10. Not sure we need a right back if Wilson is back from Chelsea.

Hoping we’ll see wingers switch more this season, especially during games. It seems to be unfashionable to have left footers on the left and right on the right, but as we’ve seen with ZSD, a winger going outside and getting a cross in is still very effective.
Though seeing his goal and penalty on Saturday which were scored with his right, is he as strong with both feet?! |  |

It’ll be a surprise when a winger does a full 90 and they might get utilised as a 10 too. Hannant could be really effective there. | |

Seven subs on the bench, five to be used.
eg: GK, defender (someone like Moss who can cover multiple positions, MF, Forward, 2x wingers, Henderson.
Last season we would often swap wing backs out with the subs, this is just an extension of this with the wingers instead. We won’t sub both wingers every game and the four may rotate into three actual appearances. | |

I'm glad he's 29, plenty of experience and still in his prime. We have plenty of creativity and pace in the final third now, i think Smith is a bit of a statement signing both for the fans but also the players we already have in the club. Mani D should be licking his lips with Smith and Hayes on the wings. | | | |
