Cummins has played really well the last couple of games. Seems to have found half a yard of pace from somewhere.
We're much better with him in the side than not. With the need for a striker to retain it up top was evident after Fleetwood, he's returned to the side and possibly made Hill think again about his January recruitment. Not so much about scoring, rather than taking the pressure off by ensuring we keep the ball when we go forward.

Good points . According to another thread , his loan is complete on 2 Jan .
That gives me concerns re who will lead the attack in the Cup . If Cummins is gone or refused permission if the loan is extended , and Donnelly remains injured , where do we find the lone striker to play in the prefered formation ? I'm not sure if its fair on Bunney to throw him in against Leeds at this stage of his development .

Preston have not allowed Cummins to play in the cups,so he won't be playing against Leeds. As Donnelly was on the bench today maybe he will get some minutes against Scunthorpe and then be thrown back into the starting 11 for the Leeds game? If not then we will probably see Hogan up top with Done behind him for Leeds. [Post edited 29 Dec 2013 17:41]

The thing with Lund is how simple he makes everything look. The ball he played down the line with the outside of his foot to Hendo late in the first half was total class. | |

The thing with Lund is how simple he makes everything look. The ball he played down the line with the outside of his foot to Hendo late in the first half was total class. |
Took our time to get into the game today, think for the first half hour Bristol Rovers were the better team but through the course of the game each Rochdale player seemed to move into the higher gears and it was a deserved win in the end. Lund for me was the best player on the pitch, great cross for the first goal. Rafferty was excellent, particularly in the second half. Although not his best performance (But by no means a bad one!), the influence Cavanagh has is noticeable, have we conceded a goal this season with him in the team? As for Cummins, a much better performance from him, ran the channels well and used the ball sensibly, a well taken goal too. |  | | |

Yes. We'd been hoofing a lot of balls clear in the first half. Lund paused for a second and picked out that pass and set us off on a great counter. Shame he couldn't finish it off.

Hilly made the point in his interview that Cav's 'defensive brain' helps the back 4 which has contributed to the 2 clean sheets. But having Cav in there also allows Lund to play more and get forward more as his goal v Mansfield proved - setting up the play and getting in the box to finish. The balance of the team is looking good now. | | | |

During their spell on top in the first half, Harrold was available to take the ball and lay it off every single time. It's so simple, but it keeps the attack going, allows the midfielders to move up in support and keeps the pressure on. Add in a few goals and we have a team nailed on for the playoffs as a minimum. Hilly knows this as well as we do, otherwise he'd never have kicked up such a fuss when Murray left, or signed COG
Whether a player of sufficient quality becomes available is the question. Making money from our FA Cup run might just make it possible to go for someone even better than Harrold, even if its just on loan for the rest of the season. Or, it might be a one-minute-to-midnight signing when the January window closes, like Lee Thorpe! | |

A physical presence would offer another option, especially useful against better teams and when the weather conditions are bad. If that type of player can hold the ball up and link play then you do not need to hoof it. | | | |

Not the point.
If the ball gets cleared from defence (e.g. Cav in a last ditch tackle) having someone who can hold it up front to relieve the pressure rather than having it come straight back would transform our options.
COG did this. Murray did this. Thorpe(to some extent) did this.

Dale play quick passing football up top. A big target man would lead to the ball getting held up, passed back to the midfield and the opposition defence getting set.
All 5 goals in the last 2 games were scored with the opposition defence stretched.
I genuinely don't think a big target man suits the rest of our play. That's my opinion, not saying it is right.

Poor comparison - Scott Hogan is our equivalent of a Messi, Suarez etc.
Know what you're saying about speed of attack, but no-ones suggesting we sign anyone who's going to slow our forward play down, are they? It's simply about having a better option than what we have at the moment. A good, mobile forward who has enough physicality to retain the ball more often. What's wrong with that? | |
