I often browse our rivals forums and came across this post on the Oxford forum

In the 36 seasons since the 3 points per win, the fourth from bottom club in this Division has had 50 or more points on 15 occasions. So 50 points has given on average about a 58% chance of survival.

54 points has been relegated once, 53 on 2 occasions, 52 on 2 occasions and 51 on 3 occasions.

So 52 points has given about an 86% chance of survival and 53 about 92% and 54 about 97%

I won't sleep easy until we have 54, but then I'm a pessimist about these sorts of things.

Edit: The lowest number of points for a 5th from bottom place was 45 in 1999-00.

So 51 points would give an 83% chance of survival.

In 1972-3, under the old system of two points for a win, Rotherham were relegated from Division 3 (our division) on 41 points.

In new money, their 17 wins and 7 draws would have garnered them an eye-watering 58 points.

They were level on 41 points with Halifax, York and Watford who would all have been below Rotherham had it been 3 points for win.

Because those three had significantly more draws, they finished above Rotherham because a draw for 1 point was more valuable in those days when you could only get 2 points for a win.

As it was, Rotherham lost out on goal average by 0.026, theirs being 0.785 and Halifax's 0.811.

And if there was one thing you could bring back from old football, it would have to be goal average where you divide goals scored by goals conceded. Dale's is currently 0.8490566037735849.

We will know a lot more come 5pm Saturday.

52 could do it...

53 I am certain would be enough as we have a small advantage with the GD*

*unless we get pummelled in one of the remaining 5 games.

it would be amazing to be 50 points or more after the Plymouth ( H ) game.

Loads of football still to be played.

UP THE DALE!!!

1937/38 season in the First Division has to be the weirdest of all time. Arsenal won the title with a mere 52 points,Manchester City and West Brom going down on 36 points,so only 16 points between top and bottom. City actually scored more goals than any other team as well,80,with a +3 goal difference.
