Has anyone bought anything online recently that has had import duty slapped on it? Am about to order some vinyl just a few hundred quids worth and wondering if it's actually worth bothering...Have looked online and its a minefield as to what the charges might be....Any thoughts would be helpful...Cheers.. |  |

I used £500 as the cost of goods and it looks like you pay 3.1% plus UK VAT .......
Importing a product classified with HS Code 9205.90.9000 (vinyl Records) to GB from JP with a value of 80000 JPY results in the following:
Duty & Tax Charges
Duty: 15.66 GBP (Rate of 3.2 %)
VAT: 100.98 GBP (Rate of 20 %)
Total: 116.64 GBP
Your Total Landed Cost Calculation
Value of Goods: 80000 JPY
Duty: 15.66 GBP
VAT: 100.98 GBP
Shipping: 25 JPY
Insurance: 10 JPY

Funny you should mention that, last week I had a boxed set of Beatles singles delivered from Dorset in the back of a van in that 40 degree heat, I was a tad unsure if they would get here without warping...On arrival they were all perfect but it is worth thinking about.... | |

I've bought lots of stuff from Japan.
Two motorcycles (used)
Many motorcycle parts (new and used)
Photo gear etc...
The only item I got stung by hmrc was for a lens, and that was the vat being added.
If the items are less than 130 gbp they seem to go under the radar, but don't quote me on that.

Any customs charges will be based on what the vendor put on the customs declaration sheet that has to be attached to the outside of the parcel.

Not Japan related but the USA.
My missus had a parcel delivered which was a gift from a friend when it arrived she had to pay vat and additional postage even though on the green sticker it had the package weight and the shipping cost which was paid..
I think she ended up paying almost £50... |  |
