Gutted for Guernsey FC losing to Spennymoor in the semi's but what a trip fro part time players to have to make - Spennymoor to Guernsey must have been a nightmare journey

Poll: Best loanee keeper

It might be a long way but Guernsey pay the travelling expenses of all the teams that visit them. Now that is some expenditure for a non-league club

The worm of time turns not for the cuckoo of circumstance.

It's only the first leg so Guernsey still have to come up to the NE, but obviously being two goals down away and having to play the second half away means Spennymoor are favourites.

We cover the Northern and Wearside Leagues on the Radio Show I appear on at Uni, and Spenny's situation in the league is incredible. They have approximately 8 or 9 games on hand in Darlington 1883 (that's the Darlo Newco if you will) and if they win them all will go over them.

Another Northern League side, Shildon, lost 2-0 at Tunbridge Wells in their Semi. If they come from behind and reach a final with Spenny then it's two all Northern League finals in two years, a great advert from Semi-Pro 'futbal' up in the NE.

Tangled up in blue.

On the other hand it is not comparing like with like. Northern league clubs have historically, for understandable financial reasons, been reluctant to take promotion into leagues higher up the pyramid with wider geographical spreads or indeed have stood outside the pyramid. Hence, in reality clubs like Spennymoor are competing against clubs from other parts of the country at a lower playing standard to themselves eg in the NW only clubs below the Evostik League compete in the Vase. The only non-league clubs in the NE above the Northern League are Gateshead and Blyth, which surely does not reflect the actual playing standards and ability of semi-pro players in the NE.

It has happened elsewhere in the country - in Suffolk a club called AFC Sudbury had a fantastic Vase record and a lot of titles in their own very local league because they refused promotion for many years (not sure why - either because they enjoyed the consistent success or for financial reasons) until they accepted a few years ago. They are now in the equivalent of Evostik League 1.
