New investment in Saints on 11:56 - Jul 3 with 1602 views | SonicBoom | I saw this on twitter a few days ago. People seemed to think it was some sort of loan deal, a way to secure funding against future income. So no t really any sort of takeover deal.
New investment in Saints on 12:00 - Jul 3 with 1586 views | dirk_doone | Sunderland fans are devastated that he's switched his interest to Saints. No wonder - he's the 27th wealthiest man in the whole world. Move aside Man City. Sonic if it's just Dell making a high interest loan to Gao, then it's not so great. But, maybe Gao is using ownership of the club as his security. [Post edited 3 Jul 2020 12:02]

Putting a charge on the club is usually done because of a loan, Saints and indeed most clubs do this from time to time to help cash flow, so they arrange a borrowing facility. This does not mean that they actually borrow the money there and then, but it s a facility so they can draw down if they need to. Usually done at the start of transfer windows so they have the ability to do a deal quickly and/or when a tranche of money is due in from the Premier League and they need to get a deal done. Given the situation currently Saints will have cash flow problems as will any club, no income since March and the money due from the Premier League not coming through in full till the season is completed and late season ticket sales dates. So although this may be part of a bigger picture, initially at east it looks to be no more than a borrowing facility as we have done several of in the past. Banks are far less likely to invest hence we perhaps have looked to an individuual investor, so not a lot to get carried away about at least just yet.

Do you think this could develop into a takeover? Or is it simply a loan and nothing more?

I have made a few phone calls and Michael Dell is interested in investing in football, but he is proceeding with the Sunderland takeover so couldn't invest in Saints if he did so. So this seems just a standard bridging loan until the Premier League payments can be paid when the fixtures are finished

Shame he's not involved in our takeover as we'll be in financial trouble within the next 2 seasons without one. Our Chinese 'owner' certainly isn't going to stump up any cash when the going gets tough. I guess him taking over Sunderland is good news locally as Stewart Donald will be free to pay his mate £1 to buy back Eastleigh with a nice few million in the bank.

Sunderland fans are going to breathe a sigh of relief then. They were bricking in on their message board that he had switched his interest to Saints.
