Gao has done a brilliant job re transfers.

He has managed our expectations so well that with a week to go before the window closes, we have got not expectation at all that anyone might be signed.

Brandon Williams has been linked again, but maybe just lazy journalism due to KWP’s injury?

We know that Gao has no money, which is why we have to pay millions in interest on loans, but we are paying the highest interest rate that any Premier League club is currently paying for a loan: nearly 10%, when other clubs are paying 0.5%. Surely with the hundreds of millions she has, Kat Liebherr could have loaned the money to the club from her private bank in Switzerland at a lower interest rate than that?

It's a 'sustainable business model', Dirk. You've clearly not been listening.

It's certainly sustained Kat very well.

"Asked why the Saints were borrowing at far greater rates than Spurs and Arsenal, Maguire told Football Insider: “The difference with Southampton is that they wouldn’t have qualified for the same loans because they have been losing money in recent years and they wouldn’t have ticked the good financial management box."

Under these circumstances, I think this will have been a good transfer window if we haven't sold any of our best players and Semmens deserves credit for that.

He is a strange one. Got the ability, but not the attitude. If he was any good, then would Leicester really be letting him go ?

He obviously thought he had made it, playing for the league winners, getting a nice contract etc, but he has dropped out of contention so quickly and there is a stream of hungrier players coming through, like Barnes etc.

Still, he is only 24 and if anyone was capable of getting something out of him, then it would probably be Ralph.

Never mind - when Redmond and Djenepo finally return, it will be like signing 2 new wingers !!

Leicester are possibly the best team in the country at the moment so they have higher standards. Zaha wasn't good enough for Man United but he is Palace's best player.

Anyway, any speculation about us buying players is mere paper talk because the club is already heavily in debt. I suppose there is an outside chance that we might get someone on loan if his wages are quite low.

It goes to show that the value of a plyer is so hugely dictated by their ability to provide the "final ball".
finding a player that can deliver it, like a Harvey Barnes or a Maddison pushes their value from that of a decent player to that of a top class player.
Currently that's the difference between us and Leicester. We match them everywhere but in creativity. They have Barnes and Maddison, we have Redmond, Djenpo and Walcott. All three capable players but all frustrate with their ability to deliver that final pass.

I think your last paragraph hits the nail on the head there, Dirk.

Poll: Which manager would you prefer Saints to have?

Why would we want to sign another winger, we have 4 on the books at the moment plus several others who can play in that position as well as promising youngsters.

But I think a few people need to get real with the situation the club is in at the moment, Gao is "unable" to put money in, not "unwilling", there is a big difference, yet still people start to lay the blame of everything at his feet, he cant help China's current stance.

Why hasn't Katharina just bailed us out for £76 million is the next whinge, maybe just possibly because she read all the Saints forums and social media that have loads of supporters not renewing season tickets for various reasons and then asking why they should put money into the club when there is a multi millionaire available to do it for them ! Charity begins at home so they say

Then there is this loan, which actually isnt a loan but a borrowing facility that we dont pay interest on until we get the money.

The articles that everyone take as gospel say we have borrowed £78 million and that is £7.2 million a year interest, this is just scribbled mathematics, as of December we were barely half way into that borrowing facility so we would only be paying based on what we had borrowed, not what we might borrow.

Some people always have to have a scapegoat, Katharina gets a slating, despite all she and her family have done for the club, Markus would turn in his grave if he could see how some people speak of his daughter, total and utter disrespect for a family who have never turned their backs on us.

Gao gets a slating, purely because he hasn't pumped a couple of hundred million into the club, if he had then we would really be in trouble now.

Gao hasn't tuned out to be the owner we hoped he would be, but he has done us no wrong and the situation has forced us to get back to what we do best which is buy cheaply and develop, when we had the cash to flash look what happened Boufal, Lemina, Carrillo Elyounoussi etc

This club can never move forward until its supporters or at least a sizable minority of them stop looking to the past and start looking to the future

Im not so sure Ralph can improve him. He hasnt been able to improve Redmond or Dnepo - i would say both have gone backwards.

You assume that Gao would have been willing to put some money in had he been able to. There might be evidence that China has closed the door, but there is also evidence that Gao personally is strapped for cash, and there is no evidence at all that he would have put money, were it not for the Chinese govt.

Gao is responsible for one good thing and that is getting Ralph in. Just look at the state of our bench in recent games to see the impact of Gao's lack of investment.

Ralph has saved Gao's blushes by getting more than most would out of the players he's got.

Quite possibly, but I guess we will never know....

I'm sure Ralph had plans for both players this season, but he has not been able to work with them very often because they have been on the treatment table for large periods of the season, with recurring injuries.

I was expecting there to be a real battle for the LM slot, but injury has hit us badly and Djenepo has probably played in less than half the games. I can't remember when Redmond last started a game and expect he has only had 4 or 5 anyway, plus a few as sub.

Not ideal for Ralph, but great testament to all those who have stepped into that position so far this season.

Hopefully both will be back soon and like I said, it will be like having 2 new signings when they both return.

.....apparently we may even see Redmond tonight off the bench.

Redmond's been struggling but my guess it's all injury related.

Djenepo has never been much good. I think Ralph keeps picking him because he's quick at getting into position when we are pressing off the ball. And he can be dangerous sometimes when very near the goal, facing the goal and with the ball already under control, but that'll be once or twice a game if we're lucky.
