We are not the richest club in the Championship. We have lost more money than almost all of them in the last year and have very few reserves. So we are one of the poorest.

We may have one of the richest owners but that isn't the same thing unless he decides to spend more money on the club. To his credit he has so far but we cant be sure he will carry on doing that.

The last accounts filed are for the 21-22 season but they already show Saints owing about £80 million to the Sport Republic group and this is before a net £100 million of transfers. So I think Saints are now effectively around £200 million in debt to Sport Republic. Maybe that doesnt matter while Sport Republic intend to continue their ownership but it does illustrate that the club is certainly not rich.

So who should be the new Captain?
at 20:28 27 Jul 2023

To be able to answer this question you first need to know who will still be here.

The only players who started for Saints in the last year or two I am reasonably sure will still be there are Gavin Buzunu, Jack Straw and Will Smallbone so maybe one of them?!

Looks like the rats are finally leaving
at 20:20 27 Jul 2023

Sorry but I don't agree. I know I am lucky to have always had a good job but I have always been loyal to my employers unless they did something specific to upset me. I never left just because somebody offered more money (and in the 1980s in London lots of companies regularly did offer a lot more money!) I know lots of people who think the same way and many are still there 30 years later.

I do agree that people will only be loyal if they get something in return - but that something is often respect and an enjoyable working environment with friendly and helpful colleagues.

I expect loyalty from my team - and usually get it but not always. It hurts me personally when people in my team leave because somebody is paying them more, although I understand it when they are young and the extra money helps them to put a deposit on a house.

Lots of people are professionals who will not work for whoever pays them (unless they have no choice). So this is not an excuse for footballers.

Saints Fan On BBC

I can understand that. We were right up close to the Arsenal fans on the end of the row. Lots of good-natured banter. Saints fans were all very loud and teasing them a lot.

We were chatting to some of them at the tube station on the way home (there was a problem so we were stuck at the station for ages) and they said that they thought we got behind our team much better than most of the visitors had that season.

Who will we need in the Championship?
at 17:38 9 May 2023

Would like Lyanco to stay at CB. Obviously would like Walker-Peters but he probably won't stay

What about Will Smallbone in midfield? Think we will also need a Romeu-type character

Sulemana on the wing + Stuart Armstrong can still do a job + Edozie

Not convinced about Tall Paul fitting into the system. Not convinced about AA as a goalscorer at any level

So we need a new GK, new striker (proper number 9 like Sam Gallagher) and midfield enforcer.

McCarthy V Bazunu

Actually the defence - excluding the keeper - hasn't been too bad statistically (before the last few games). Somebody told me it was 6th best in the league.

Yes but you need to look at how many goals they conceded compared to the expected (for which Bazunu apparently had by far the worst stats in the league).

I agree McCarthy made a few mistakes but the fact that he conceded more goals average per game doesnt necessarily make him worse if we were playing more attacking and defending less during those games.

Not sure I understand. We always stand close to the away fans because that's where the best atmosphere is for the home fans. What would moving the away fans do to help? Where would you move them to?

Clear out the uncommitted players

The following need to go, I wouldnt even wait till the end of the season. Doubt anybody will pay for them so they migh just have to be released:

Bazunu (I know he's only young but not good enough for Championship)
Caleta-Carr (liability)
Perraud (too slow)
(Maitland-Niles but he'll go back to Arsenal anyway)
Bednarek (doesnt care enough and not good enough for Championship)
Diallo (not good enough and not good enough for Championship)
Adam Armstrong (not good enough for Championship)
Aribo (can't defend)
Alcaraz (can't defend, would rather dive than try to score)
Mara, Orsic, Elyounoussi, Onuachu
