In all fairness Routledge was out of his depth in the prem and has found his level on the pitch this season. Unfortunately for him he has been grossly overpaid for this level and he needs to decide to take a wage cut if that's what the club offers.

ROutledge out of his depth in the PL?

He certainly wasnt when playing under Laudrup, the issue has been since Laudrup our managers have been such that preferred "shape" and a style of football which did not suit a player such as Routs...or Dyer actually. Yes he is now older but I think with the right style of play he could still do a cameo job in the PL......HE is above this level...watch him without the ball he makes superb runs into spaces, or passes into spaces but often his team mates havent read those movements....Im not saying he would or could be a PL regular but in the right sides he would still perfom ok at that level. Put him in a Pullis/Warnock side even in the championship and people would be calling him up in holes for being crap!

James to M United 10m according to the Mail, Liverpool interested.

According to the Beeb Newcastle interested too, so with Man U and City, Everton,Liverpool,Newcastle,Bournemouth and maybe Leeds still all sniffing around hopefully our new "savvy" chairman should be able to secure a minimum of £15M with add ons?

Some people can see this. Others, you’ll never be able to explain it to. They just think he’s shit because he missed a one on one their gran could score or ineffective because his assists could be higher.

What they miss is that most professional players, let alone their gran, wouldn’t have seen the run he made to be put through on goal or the two defenders he took out of the equation with a clever touch in the lead up to the chance.

He’s been fairly consistently picked (apart from when Potter wasn’t allowed to) by people who know far more about football than any of us ever will.

Routledge movement and work rate have always been above par. Amazing the amount of fans he has all of a sudden.

Routledge was out of his depth in the PL for a good two years. Now we're at a lower level he's useful again. No real mystery to it.

Had we adequately replaced players like him when we were a Premier League team perhaps we might still be one.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

Can’t agree with you there. If we’d gone up this season, he’d have been fine next.

He would have looked out of his depth the entire time we were in the PL, plus this season, if we had played the kind of football we did under Clement and Carvahal for the duration.

Of course you can't. You've been a fanatical Routledge loyalist for years.

Nah. The football under Clement wasn't great but that doesn't excuse how much the years were catching up with him. He's had a new lease of life playing against lesser opposition this season and that's fine, but I don't see the point in pretending that he would have been of any use to us next season if we'd gone up.

34 yr old Wayne Routledge playing up front in the Premier League? Not a chance.

Yeah I have. I appreciate decent footballers. Most managers have shared my view.

There is a middle ground here. Obviously it’s easier in the Championship than the PL. That’s not the reason he’s gone from whipping boy to one of our best players though. Hell of a coincidence that age caught up with him, when he was 30, at more or less the same time we started playing a brand of football completely unsuited to him.

People say ‘up front’ like he’s a centre forward. We are much more fluid than that.
