The council has already taken steps to safeguard our core services and to protect the vulnerable. This work will continue as this health emergency develops over the coming weeks and months. This is a fast-moving situation which means the information and advice is being frequently updated. Please continue to use the council's website to find the latest information and advice. The Civic Centre is closed to the public and open to staff only. The Guildhall is open to staff only. Public toilets The council is closing a number of public toilets. Only those public toilets in the city centre will remain open for the time being. Second homes Those with second homes in Swansea and Gower, including caravan parks, are being asked to stay away and remain in their primary residence. This is in line with UK and Welsh Government expectations. Elections The Police and Crime Commissioner election scheduled for May 7, 2020, has been postponed until May, 2021. Schools Schools across Swansea are closed to their pupils but some schools have re-opened on a hub basis to provide care for children of key or essential workers where only ONE parent is needed to be a key worker: NHS staff Blue light/emergency services staff Prison workers Social care workers School staff Those who work in food production and delivery. Vulnerable pupils identified by the council and schools will also be provided with access to a number of childcare sessions based on need and capacity. This could begin as early as Wednesday (March 25 2020) and we will contact parents and carers directly. Schools will be cleaned between 5.00pm and 7.00pm daily. Children and young people entitled to free school meals will be able to collect 'Grab and Go' bags that will contain a cold healthy packed lunch. Waste and parks All our parks are closing with immediate effect. Our kerbside recycling services are continuing as normal. Recycling Centres will be closed until further notice from Tuesday 24 March. Adult Services In line with Government advice re vulnerable people, the Council has closed day services, respite services and social clubs for the foreseeable future. We will be considering individual cases to identify and understand any additional support that may be required by individuals and families affected by these closures. Visits to council-operated residential care homes are being restricted to only those which are essential. Mobility Hire Swansea Mobility Hire services have been suspended until further notice. Staff will be redeployed to other important services. Child and Family Services The council's Flying Start childcare and some childminders remain open, however parents should keeping in contact with their childcare setting to discuss childcare arrangements for keyworkers. Parents are reminded that children should only attend if their parent/s are critical keyworkers and have no other alternative for childcare. Housing We have suspended new work on fitting kitchen and bathroom replacements. We plan to complete work that has started so tenants will not be without important household functions. During that work, staff will adhere strictly to the social distancing guidelines and we ask tenants to respect this.
