Self employed question 09:23 - Apr 16 with 2467 viewsdickythorpe

If you are self employed and find yourself with no work at this time, is it ok to take a zero hours contract job with a supermarket?
A good friend of mine is unbelievably getting hassle for doing this.

As far as I can see as long as you aren't making money for your business you are free to find a job elsewhere.

It’s something dicky and I’ll consider it but in reality it would be putting myself in more debt. The self employed get a grant that they don’t have to pay back, shopkeepers the same, that is bearing in mind that some shops and businesses are busier than they’ll ever be. This loan is aimed at businesses like mine where we operate Ltd companies - I had no choice other than limited due to the restrictions that the government put on my clients, and now because of it we don’t qualify for self employed support.

One worrying thing about all this is furloughed staff. Lots of people are on state funded holiday at the moment. I’ve furloughed one member of staff and know of many others, but without the job protection scheme these people would have been let go. If the government continues to refuse to support businesses like mine, as they have others, we will find that owners are liquidating their companies or folding however they can, and these people won’t have jobs to go back to when furlough ends.

That's very informative Itchy. It is worrying as well.

I've everything crossed like many others, that the infection rates decrease rapidly soon and a vaccine is invented.
