We need to get them so often because of they way the immune system reacts to this particular virus and the virus will never go away. Hopefully though we'll all develop suffcient immunity and the virus will become less deadly, either relatively or through evolution to not need annual jabs in the way we do for flu.
The vaccines do work, fantastically well. We are living with virtually no restrictions and we are seeing considerably less infections, hosptilaisations and deaths than this time last year. That is solely down to the vaccines. This time last year we weren't even allowed to buy sparklers in Tesco.
