| Rip off degrees on 20:58 - Jul 19 by Kilkennyjack | Or …… a lot of people got life chances that nobody else in their families had ever had before ? The Tory party hates critical thinking. Universities teach critical thinking. No connection i am sure. Degrees for Mogg, but not the Jack Army. |
You don't have to have gone to Uni to be capable of critical thinking, I'd say think about it but it'd be a waste.... PS, Max, I'm not dissing all degrees, just the few that are pointless. Then there's those that go to Uni more for the craic than to get a degree and crash out. There are also those who discover their degree cannot get them a job because there are too mnay qualified students for too few jobs but they still have that debt. The ability to get a decent job and earn a tidy living is not dependent on going to Uni which is why schools need more vocational courses and there needs to be many more apprenticeships available. That last line is puerile, who even suggested that....

Thats the bottom line though, they dont like educated people who call them out. Please can you tell us how you know so much about degree courses that you have never been on. You must be one clever mother. I dont have a degree, but i still think education and skills is a good investment for society. Its a bit like health, its good to help people stay healthy. You dont just help those who contribute taxes, say. None of this says we do not need tradesmen. Thats just the right wing media and you. Likewise only you said only graduates are capable of critical thinking. You made it up. Johnson won a scholarship to study Literae Humaniores at Balliol College, Oxford, a four-year course in the study of the Classics, ancient languages, literature, history, and philosophy. What do you know about that one ?

Well my lad had to move away to get his first job and he done well to, he works in Cardiff now, but works from home 2/3 times a week. He wouldn't have got that job if he hadn't had that first job.

Here is the thing, I am not really training to be a space man. You’d need a degree for that ….. How do you know so much about uni degrees that you have never studied ? Remarkable. [Post edited 20 Jul 2023 23:23]

I called you a space cadet, you don't need a degree to be out of touch with reality. I don't need to have done a degree to know from life experience (as well as media reporting) that some degrees are pointless while others are massively over subscribed with no career path likely at the end because there aren't enough jobs out there so it leaves students with a big debt AND poor career prospects. Now that last line, when did you study me? Here's a thought, not everybody that could have gone to Uni actually goes to Uni. Oh, and 2 questions, you have had your say, did you go to Uni, did you study a degree? | | | | Login to get fewer ads

I now that my half sister has an art degree and cannot get a job with it. I know that broadcasters on tv and radio have openly said having a degree was no good with many starting at the bottom (as tea boy or girl) and taking chances when they came, media studies degrees were, they said, pointless and knew nobody with one who was on our tv screens. That may have changed in the last 10 years. I know HTV Wales interveiwed young people who were unemployed, they had degrees but refused to take some jobs as it was below their degree, those jobs included working in mobie phone shops, McDonalds, cleaning, minimum wage jobs. If you have a degree that doesn't get you a job then it is pointless, that much I do know.

What about Johnson then ? His degree is in Literae Humaniores at Balliol College, Oxford, a four-year course in the study of the Classics, ancient languages, literature, history, and philosophy. I guess you would rate that as pointless - yes ?

You're just being obtuse now. Literature, History, Philosophy, where have I called them useless? Another thing, I haven't commented on the content of any degree just that some of the degrees themselves are useless out in the real world and won't help you get a job. As for Bojo he;s just another well educated idiot but does having a degree make him a better person, I think we would agree that it doesn't. He's good with words which helped him rise up but ultimately who he is, a lying, deceitful, selfish idiot was his downfall and the cause of massive problems in this country. The degree itself, not pointless, Bojo, pointless.

I have no idea why you are asking me. I could tell you anything and you would not know if its true or not. So the question itself is pointless. Anyhow … i am training to be shepherd now …. Spaceman is too hard.

Agree on Johnson. Its just you appear to rate the value of vocational type degrees, but not some other degrees. Johnson’s degree is clearly not vocational, but he rose to PM (somehow). Thank you for the considered reply.

Sorry but what I rate is the area of the qualification, not the type of degree. A degree in bum sniffing is obviously useful to Bojo acolytes but it's no good for decent politicians. A degree in art is pretty useless as my half sister has found out. She trained to be a teacher but an Art teacher only to find there are a lot of people with Art degrees who are teachers so no work for her, she s now a teachng assistant, Art degree not relevant there. A degree encompassing Hstory and Literature is useful for journalism. Some degrees are apparently easier to pass than others because they don't require so much critical thinking and the advent of ChatGPT, the AI database, people can present well written, factually correct essays as their own, I have read that this happens. A vocational degree perhaps followed by an apprenticeship gives you a skill set for life. My son has been told if he worked harder he's bright enough and could go to Uni but he is more inclined (as was I) towards playing football and having fun. We have talked long and hard about this and he made his choices for next school year based on aiming at an apprenticeship in the construction industry he is doing a module called "constuction" where he will do work experience with a trade and will be taught the basics of several trades. Those youngsters who know what they want to do and aim for a relevant degree, well done to them. However, those that take an "easy" degree just to go to Uni, who may get a poor degree or even drop out because they are there for fun, not to work, those degree courses are pointless.

I was considered bright ( honest) but rather truculent and lacking concentration on matters that didn’t interest me . It’s why I passed all my 6 GCEs with top grades and failed the others with the lowest . It was 1966 and exciting time so last thing I wanted to do is carry on studying …anything. I haven’t done too bad Had I time over again,I would have done a bricklaying course and ended up a skilled brick I’d like me or fella and run a business in construction
