| New transfer link on 08:27 - Aug 7 by raynor94 | First game for Ashby, Newcastle haven't allowed him to come here to sit on the bench |
Well unfortunately, if he plays shit that’s what he will be doing

| New transfer link on 08:54 - Aug 7 by cadleigh | While I agree with a lot of what @SullutaCreturned says about formations, I think @raynor94 and @Whiterockin have nailed it. Whatever you think of the respective managers, under Cooper we had a great reputation for developing Premier League players on loan, while under Martin that well started to run dry. Watson has made us attractive again, and he won’t indulge Duff if he decides to bench Ashby simply because he prefers another player for subjective reasons. (If Ashby doesn’t deliver the goods, of course the manager has no obligation to play him and we should return him at the first opportunity having kept his parent club informed at all stages.) So Ashby starts. And so does Key. And unless we are shopping for a new LB purely as back-up for Key in that position (which I very much doubt), both play on the right. I agree that Duff has favoured a back 3 so far. He’s also said he is agnostic about formations and willing to mix it up, as he did up front against Birmingham. It comes down to this: as a manager will he play his best starting XI, or the XI players best able to slot into his preferred formation? I think we could have a really strong 4-2-3-1 in the making with this squad. |
We are shopping for a left back though, and not for backup. Key won’t be playing there for much longer. Unless he has a few storm era maybe, before the new signing gets his foot in. Personally I think Duff will want to play his formation as it’s served him so well in the past. If he can sign a good LWB, why would he not?

True, but he had a couple of days training with the squad before starting on Saturday - hardly time to get to know their names let alone how they play. Newcastle see him as a serious successor to Trippier so I’m going to give him a few more games before deciding if he’s any good. In the meantime, I’m presuming he will be our first choice RB.

If Ashby performs well, who does he start at RWB - Ashby or Key? If we sign a new LWB, what does he do with Ginnelly? Unless he plans to play: GK 3xCB Ashby/Key Fulton Grimes New LWB Piroe Yates Ginnelly Only a problem if Ashby, Ginnelly and Key all turn out to be assets, of course.

When we sign a left back we will go with a flat back four.

I would love to see that. Would allow Cabango and Wood to play to their strengths. I’m not anti playing three CBs per se, but at this level you need high quality wing backs to make it work (and ideally back up in case one is not available). I do feel we could do with a new number 10 - ideally one who can take set pieces. Particularly with Ntcham going.

Can't see Ashby being classed as our asset given his loan status but an asset if he helps us get promoted but one that would need to replace or retain at a cost. If he does well Newcastle will benefit if they sell him and if he does really well he could be integrated into their team, if he doesn't do well why would we want him. He would only become our asset if we get promoted and can afford him and he enjoyed his time here and became a preferred option for him if he cannot break it Newcastle's team. May be an asset but not our asset or am I being picky? | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Fair challenge. I wasn’t meaning asset in the balance sheet sense, merely as shorthand for ‘turn out to be any good’. It wasn’t the best choice of word really.

More than happy to have good loan signing to help us to get us to where we want to be but not too many which could stop the progression of our youngsters and leaves our squad weaker when the loan spells end with no adequate cover in the vacated position that the loanee made his own as happen when Cooper left. If we send out on loan our expected future first team youngsters are we ensuring their contracts are suitable to ensure we reap the benefits of that loan.

I totally agree.I was just saying that although Newcastle expect him to be playing most of our games, they can’t dictate what we do if the player doesn’t perform. I fully expect him to up his game and be a regular starter. Key also, but I’m unsure how it will work, as they are both on the same side and Duff clearly doesn’t want a right footed LB

Just an opinion but Key for me, and Ashby further forwards.

All about opinions, I recon we will go with a back 4 with Ashby RB and Key further forward. [Post edited 9 Aug 2023 23:19]

We have 2 quality RWB by the look of it. I assume at least 1 LWB to be signed, who should be quality, if our recruitment is as good as it seems to be. I’d say a backup left footer is probably 1 of the three Diff wants in. Looks like that arsenal kid is the third.

Looks as if Duff wants as a permanent quality Left footed Wingback as well as a quality loan player in the same position giving him strength in depth, will Duff also be looking at extra Central defender and midfielder as well?
