| Leo Walta assist as Finland defeat New Zealand. on 08:02 - Mar 28 with 1385 views | Dr_Winston | It's what we have if we use him properly. We need to get the ball forward quickly to where he can work instead of leaving him marooned in no mans land like we did last time he started. That means selecting a midfield intended to do more than just pass it around. Indeed, most of our problems going forward can be eased, if not outright cured, just by attacking with more pace and intent than we do. Next game we need Galbraith at 6, Widell at 8 and Walta at 10. To play that formation I think we would need our full backs to sit deeper because I don't think there would be the physical defencive cover with Galbraith. Plus our midfield would possibly lack hight. | | | |

We have seen hints of those driving runs from both Widell and Galbraith which leave opposition midfielders and defenders having to deal with the problem scrabbling, we saw the same from O'Brien and because of his threat he was pushed further forward and wasn't such a success to the team as we struggled without his midfield cover. Would Widell and Galbraith skills be better suited starting from the deeper midfield position able to link up play with their passing, movement and knowing when to hold onto the ball, lay off or drive while both mobile and quick enough to do the defence work and Stamenic that seems to struggles with. Widell is starting to have more influence on games but still needs more experience but is getting there, same could be said of Galb but he is further along. You could question whether with these players we should adopt a 4-4-2 at times Widell and Gabraith in the middle and I would put Stamenic further forward alongside Vipotnik who has looked isolated at times. As the two deep players tire we then have Franco and hopefully an up to speed Walta to rotate, when I say up to speed I mean fully integrated with the team. If not Stamenic alongside Vipotnik then Wales, these are young players that need game time to enable them compete at Championship level, we have to have options, it would appear that we have midfield option but in other areas we are lacking fullbacks expected to be both attackers and wingers must ensure that in games against better teams they are first and foremost defenders and that the defensive shape is solid then. We have to realise that against better teams a lot of our attacks are going start from a deep position and players need good movement and drive from deep but as some players push forward that the defence has to remains solid with cover, is Stamenic up to speed in that area of the game yet, given the number of yellow cards not quite yet hence Fulton's return. Would Widell and Galbraith be a better option to enable quicker switches in play through the midfield? [Post edited 28 Mar 9:18]

Leon used to play that role. Galbraith is no less physically capable than him. Probably a bit more so. I think we need to move away from the idea that we need a "big man" in there because it is limiting us. I am convinced that a good chunk of our problems lie with that triangle between CB's and DM. We have to get the ball moving out of there a lot quicker, and neither Stamenic or Fulton, whilst both being capable players in other areas, are known for their playmaking abilities. Getting the ball forward faster means that our wide players are less likely to have to battle past 2/3 defenders just to get into a dangerous position, a player like Walta would have more space to operate in, and Vipi would potentially have more service.

Do you really need that height in the midfield especially if the likes of Cabango and Burgess take responsibility for the aerial battles, and once that is won quick play and good ball skills are needed to get the ball under control quickly and out of danger to create forward momentum. I do like a bit of height in the team as it seems against the Championship giants that is needed especially towards the end of games at times. As for the fullbacks sitting deeper that is exactly what they did on Matos arrival, I think they have started sitting inside a bit too much now leaving the wingers free maybe because better teams get players running into the channels which aren't being picked up by the midfield or spare centrehalf, maybe against better teams our wingers should tuck in to enable a press and the midfield block the middle routes, should we be a little more cautious with our press either getting it right to isolate players while marking tight to reduce options for the player on the ball. For your second paragraph isn't that exactly what O'Brien provided. but one player cannot do it alone especially against good mobile teams Cabango and Burgess have their work cut out and need the help of quick thinking , pacy players to pick up the scraps tidying up play and getting the ball under control and away to areas for our safety and danger for the opposition.

Yep. The best football we ever played (IMO) was when we had Leon at 6, with Ash and Chico at CB. Flores could be halfway to the halfway line with the ball before opposing teams even knew what was happening. We were so good on the counter. Chuck in JdG who could also turn the game from defence to attack so smooth and quick was he in possession. That speed made life much easier for Routledge and Dyer, neither of whom were top level pacy, but had more time to work because we gave it to them. The quality of the players isn't the same, but neither is the quality of the teams we're facing. The principle is the same though. Dithering with the ball as much as we've started to just makes life easier for our opponents. We've not drifted back into the worst of Russy/Williamsball, but we've lost a bit of the early impetus that Matos brought. We need it back.

Yes we need a certain amount of hight throughout the team, particularly for set plays. A midfield of Galbraith 5'9", Walta 5'7" and Widell 5'11" is just to short. Thow in Tymon, Key, Eon and Ronald at 5'10" thats over half the side under 6 foot, we would get slaughtered at any set play.

The midfield that got us promoted the last time was Stephen Dobbie (5'8"), Leon Britton (5'4"), and Joe Allen (5'7").

The average hight of a championship team now is over 6 foot and set plays are more relevant, we can't expect to defend them if we play only 3 players over 6 feet. Different times different needs.

Great. We should be able to play around the lumbering buggers then. It's a trade off I'm happy to risk. 3/4 six footers plus a keeper ought to be enough at most set plays.
