New migration deal with France 07:36 - Apr 23 with 3548 viewsAnotherJohn

The UK and France have agreed a new 3 year deal to assist the control of cross-channel migration. It consists of a base deal of about the same value as the previous deal (about £500m), plus another £160m dependent on meeting certain targets. The Government has so far not explained the conditionality, but this appears to fall short of the Home Secretary’s wish that the interception rate should increase from about 34% of small boat launches to over 70%. This deal takes funding since 2022 to over a billion GBP, and the sum since deals started in 2018 to over £1.5b. In the 2018-2025 period an estimated 193,000 undocumented immigrants have crossed the channel. When you factor in what these cost after arrival the total bill isn’t cheap. Do board members think this is a worthwhile deal?

The man is scum.

But there is a big caveat - he was convicted in absence AFTER getting here. So he wasn't walking around the streets as a convicted murderer with anyones knowledge until he was arrested and put on remand.

It goes without saying that we don't want detritus like this on our streets but there is criticism in this thread of the new deal with France. So what do we do to stop them?

“So what do we do to stop them “ how about no documents no entry regardless then maybe your caveat would be meaningless. I’m not a pig breeder but I know that with only 2 legs is pretty useless and this same well tried useless idea will follow the same route , just more money wasted and more of this shi**e being allowed entry. I wonder what ever happened to the new border force tsar, the one which was going to over see this issue , like many other “ideas” out on the next tide.

I think I misread it - he was already in Europe and not Britain.

Shocking.

This new deal isn't gonna stop them crossing, the Frogs and laughing their legs off, how much have we already paid the t@@t's and what have they done, Starmer couldn't run a bath Macron and Lecornu have again convinced Mr Gullible Starmer yet again, I wonder if he wastes his own money like us taxpayers money, mans a walking disaster.

People were going over and slashing the boats and the Frogs were stopping them and threaten to arrest them and now we're paying them yet more money to stop them.

If we had a Navy with ships to sail in they could turn them back mid channel, but we haven't got those war ships, the Border force should be turning them back.

What would make it a tad easier to stop them is for the government to pull us out of the ECHR but as we know starmer wants closer ties to the EU and therefore thats not going to happen .

It would barely make a difference.

But it would make an awful lot of other things easier, like exploiting workers rights, discriminating against the elderly and disabled eyc

Well leaving the ECHR will give the state the power to do what they want when they want. To you.

"Not barely make a diffence" , well if it makes no diffence then why have it . the convention contains 14 articles each representing a basic human right or freedom, including the rights to life, to liberty and security, to a fair trial ( the removal of trial by jury , to respect for private and family life some of which are currently being denied by this government.

More money thrown at a problem that France won’t do a great deal about.

Considering France has taken in many times more than we have, and they aren't French citizens, I don't blame them. I would guess they want rid of them as much as we do

If leaving the ECHR is meaningless then why be part of it ? Our liberties in certain aspects of our lives are being taken away or at the very least diluted .

It wouldn't make deporting immigrants any easier, because it stops hardly any being deported now.

What do you mean our liberties would be diluted? Most are enshrined in that very legislation.

In practice the incorporation of case law based on A3 (torture and inhumane treatment) and A8 (right to a family and private life) of the ECHR into UK domestic judgements has led to the blocking of many deportations. There is argument, however, about whether withdrawing from the Convention would be enough to sweep aside accumulated case law (so-called common law) that would also impede many deportations.

To me, the main reason for leaving is that the ECHR is not a static legal framework; rather the "living instrument" doctrine means that it has been progressively modified by activist judges in the ECoHR without those modifications ever been approved by national parliaments. It is worth reading Jonathan Sumption's article on the changes that have occurred in recent years.

Appreciate your knowledge on the finer points of any legal arguments , but in my case I really am drawn into the BS baffles brains scenario , small print covers all faults .

Will the next May Welsh Assembley and Local Elections over the border be fudged by waffle and doctored figures on the triumph of Starmers smashing the small boat gangs as pledged in his manifesto .

Reform will still get the voting patterns based on no more illegals here .

The authors of this report have only counted UK cases that actually went to the ECoHR, but I was careful to say that the real problem concerns the incorporation of principles based on the ECHR into UK domestic law and judgments in our courts. Mathias Guyomar, the President of the ECoHR, recently made much the same argument in an interview on Times Radio. Stig Abell described this as a deliberate misunderstanding of the question asked. It really misses the point when it comes to the practical impact of the Convention on a much larger number of cases in British courts.
