Brian Flynn would save the Swans from relegation to non-league and financial hardship in May 2003. Kenny Jackett built on that rescue and laid the foundations for Martinez. At the time he left I sometimes felt like a lone voice defending him from some really quite nasty personal abuse despite his obvious personal decency. It was not uncommon for him to be compared to a rodent (Crazy Coypu was a frequent epithet hurled his way by people pretending to respect him now).
Things hadn't gone particularly well during the latter stages of that second season back in L1, but considering that his reign to that point had been one of consistent achievement it's a shame that he felt he had no option but to leave despite being ninth in the table and only five points from the playoffs with a game in hand.
Maybe he felt that those in power at the club had more respect for the shit stirrer he'd bombed out the previous Summer and had too much dignity to waste any more time on them. Maybe if he'd stuck around to reap the benefits of signing the already lined up Ferrie Bodde and Jason Scotland we'd have won promotion the following season anyway.
Still, I'm glad that people are finally acknowledging the job he did at a critical period for the club, even if it would have been better if more had done so at the time. His subsequent track record and the tributes that have followed his passing from everywhere he's worked are a fitting legacy. [Post edited 21 Jun 10:44]
