Every Senior outfield player on the bench bar Cirkin and maybe Saito was returning from Injury. None of them had 45mins in them as was proved by more injuries.

We had 1 defender reserve (after Cirkin was used, edit)in Clark Salter and no option at all for RB

Only chance we had was to hit them early and we were too wasteful.

Fitness is as always the problem here. Not the manager

Correct me if I'm wrong but if you're responding to me talking about changes from HT onwards I'm talking more specifically about tactics rather than personnel. Southampton didn't make any substitutions, just tactical tweaks that had an immediate impact. In my opinion Stephan and his staff failed to identify and react to them at all and our first 2 subs were only like for like changes on the 60 minute mark that didn't alter anything in our favour. The only small detail I noticed after those first 2 subs was Saito drifting in to more central spaces to create overloads but we failed to get him on the ball.

I think once we scored we needed Kolli up top to try and do a better job of holding up the ball and linking play that Kone couldn't, and Alemayehu in the 10 could have helped the midfield but also provided energy in supporting attacks. I imagine he thought Lloyd could stretch them in behind but Smyth struggled to do that all game anyway so it wasn't like that was hurting them and just needed some fresh legs. Cirkin coming on for Kemper was purely managing minutes but the need to do that prevents us making more changes in attacking areas, Chair for Kamara felt like sentiment and just getting him back on the pitch.

Stephan has definitely got more things right than wrong so far this season but Eckert got the better of him in the second half today and he didn't have an answer for it, regardless of who was on the Bench.

Edit - Forgot to emphasise that Stephan has perhaps been too hasty to bring on players returning from injury like Lamptey and Lloyd, and he done it with Burrell last season only for them all to immediately break down and leave us with 10 men.

Lloyd looked like he sloop;ed for the injury today so guessing hamstring injury , no fan of cycling Ben but not sure he can be blamed for that one , as yes at;Eshan didn’t do much to stop what was happening. Today but with the midfield Aval there’s no surprise , hopefully we get some cash for varanne and invest in a def wide cm who can sit and clear up in front of the back four

I thought Adamson did pretty well considering what he was up against. Particularly in the first half. I don't think he was helped much by Poku defensively down his flank who also seemed to ignore Adamson's overlapping runs repeatedly.

Saito, who ever thought he was good enough for the Champ, same goes for Kone,Vale and Poku

Sorry chap.

Think you said this in haste.

But you saying it about Kone, who got our quickest hat trick in history in the last game and scored a cracking goal in this one. If other elements of his game failed, remember he is a centre forward.

Saito, Vale and Poku are all inconsistent, but on their days, they are certainly decent.

Apart from that?.......

Yes it's getting beyond a joke. I can only recall Liverpool beating us 7 in a row and they were bloody good. An aggregate score of 9-1 in two visits this year. Not so long ago Saints were losing 9-0 at home to Leicester. Once again it was men against boys.

Our last four games have all been one sided, 4-1 and 5-0 wins at home at home and 0-3 and 1-4 defeats away. It makes it look like there are two divisions within one league rather like the Premiership. It wouldn't have looked so bad if we hadn't conceded stoppage time goals today and at Birmingham as two goal defeats would have been better reflections of both games.

Whilst it might be true Southampton look a cut above, in their previous two home games they only beat Portsmouth 1-0 and drew 0-0 with Bolton. In comparison we were hopeless in defence and I thought we might have made it more difficult for them to score. I am scratching my head how Bolton could prevent them scoring and then concede 8 goals in their following two home games.

I really hope we can bounce back and beat Burnley who have stuffed us 8-0 on previous visits as we owe them but now we have lost another striker. These injuries will be our downfall I fear.

I don’t think that you can look at how teams played against other teams and conclude how good we are. Sometimes teams and managers raise their games against the ‘better teams’ because they expect to have to work harder. For example if Man Utd had played against other teams the way they started against Chelsea yesterday they wouldn’t be 17th in the league. But those players were up for it against Chelsea even though they imploded eventually. Southampton knew we had beaten Swansea handsomely. It wouldn’t be hard to get them to raise their game Maybe less so against Bolton and Portsmouth.

We didn’t play our best either. Maybe part of the difference is where we were weak yesterday is where the best teams are strong: in midfield. They absolutely pulverised us in midfield without Madsen. Same against Birmingham. It’s a pity that we’d only just played Birmingham with a similar team because Eckhart just needed to follow it as a template. Play through our midfield and overload our right hand side. Which is exactly what he did. We don’t have the pace without Burrell and Mbengue to catch them napping so they could push right up. I don’t blame Adamson because I was right by him against Birmingham and time after time he had two or three players to mark. Stephan needs to solve that against the better teams because you can’t hang your FBs out to dry with no support. It’s also the flaw of playing Smyth up front because he’s a better cover for Kemper than anyone else is.

Unfortunately it is still a problem that we can’t get our best players fit. Playing Varane, Kamara, Vale and Poku against Matsuki, Azaz, Scienza Ward Porwse and Bragg is not really a fair fight!
