I wonder how much yesterday even meant to them. I can imagine 'fans' of the club not watching the game and checking the BBC website and barely even saying anything.

That'd be a sad, dispassionate way to support a football team. At least we get to rant about how fking terrible we are.

We had a visitor from NYC in our office, yesterday, and a Man Utd "fan" from Wembley was trying to explain to him why he had to leave bang on five: "In England, football is like a religion, we live for football, and my team can win the league tonight, so me and all my boys are meeting-up to watch the game in the pub. Man, you have to go the pub for the big games - the atmosphere gets crazy - much better than watching them at home."

Clueless bas tard will never know the highs and lows of properly supporting a club. I kept bursting into tears for several days after we beat Juve and HSV. I've randomly burst into tears singing "Maybe it's because I'm a Londoner" at Wrexham. Okay, maybe I'm emotionally incontinent, but he probably high-fived his mates and then went home to bed and won't give a 20th title another thought.

That's a bit unfair on him, you need to get to the pub early or else all the summer fruits flavour Rekorderlig sells out.

I've worked with Man Utd tw@ts who haven't even bothered watching Champions League games because 'the missus was watching something else.'

I work with a 40-something Liverpool fan who was talking to me about a game earlier this season and said, "I was so angry, I turned the telly off". Which just made me smile.

Although it would be nice to taste success, events like winning the Championship and getting promotion from Div 1 are events that will remain will meforever because they are not regular occurences. Ask Man U 'fans' to recite their memories of each title win and they'll struggle to recall what event happened when. It must be boring being a ManUre fan and even fans of Arse have a dull existence when success is defined as winning the league and noting else.
On the other hand, being a mid-table side such as Stoke, Fulham etc can;t be much fun either unless they get a cup run.
At least being a QPR fan is never dull. The football may be, but the events surrounding it aren't.

My two favourite seasons are 96/97 with promotion from the 4th, because we'd been pony for so long and it was unexpected after our lowest ever finish, and the year we got to the Europa League final; partly because it was just mental getting all the way to the final, but also because it was so unexpected. I enjoyed our two other promotions, but given our resources, they weren't great surprises, so didn't mean as much.

As things stand at the moment, it's nice to beat one of the big clubs (Tottenham away the other week), but yeah, it lacks the excitment of stressing for months about every game played in your division and how it impacts your chances of promotion (or relegation). Having said that, I'm happy enough in the PL because I know that it's not always easy to get back. I'd just like to see us win a major honour: even a league cup win would do me for life.

BTW I hate these types too. Got a so called Chelsea supporter at work who thinks he is a loyal supporter because he goes when he gets free hospitality tickets and watches the rest of his games in the pub.

Reminds me of a work colleague who once told me he had a Liverpool season ticket. A couple of months later he asked to come in early for him 'as I never miss Man Utd at home'.I work near your ground Konk and I was coming in about 2 hours before kick off and I knew he didn't drive. So I said ' I thought you had a season ticket for Liverpool , so how are you going to get to Anfield in 2 hours?'. He then said ' my SKY subscription is a Liverpool season ticket as they are on most games'. He then went home and watched it on tv.

Ha-ha. Sounds about right. My favourites are the ones who get the right raving hump when a throw-in is given against their team and start punching the walls and stuff, and storm out of the pub when they lose whilst shouting abuse at the telly in the corner. They're also the ones who stand-up to clap substitutions, sing songs and start climbing on the furniture to celebrate cup wins etc. Fuc king weird. If you're that into it, go and watch the occasional game in the flesh, you fu cking tits.

I've met so many who just cannot get their heads round why anyone would support a club like Fulham - they're genuinely completely bamboozled by anyone supporting a team who never win anything. If you're going to "support" a team from a few hundred miles away that you'll never actually go to see, why not go the whole hog and "support" Real Madrid or Barcelona? Their games are on the telly too.

Kids in my nephew's school - in an area where pretty much everyone used to support Arsenal or Tottenham - now routinely list Barcelona as the club they support. But if kids are priced-out of going to watch their local sides, I guess you end-up with this sort of thing. You can watch them winning on the telly every week, so why not? Some of them may even get to go on the stadium tour one day. Good work Premier League/SKY/FA,

I remember chatting to a so called Utd 'fan' at a wedding a couple of years ago. I got the usual patronising guff you receive from doses who support clubs like them.' Oh it must be hard supporting a team that regularly struggles. Why do you do it?' He also smuggly stated that in his lifetime of following Utd [ this bloke was 60 if not older ] he had never seen his club relegated. I swiftly waded in here to remind him that in 1974 a former Utd hero Dennis Law then playing for City sent his beloved Utd down to Div 2. Instant stuttering and memory loss from so called Utd 'fan'. I left the fool looking bewildered and went off and socialised elsewhere.

It's the same with a lot of Chelsea 'fans' nowadays. Was there a Chelsea before Abramovich??

There aint half been some clever bastards.

Memories you say?

I was driving through some god forsaken outback of Wales in my Vauxhall Cresta the day we sold Rodney Marsh, It sort of crackled on the car radio's medium wave thing, we always knew he was going but It was still devastating when It actually happened.

When Sir Les and Stan went that was bad enough but Rodneeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.
He wore Harmony hairspray too.
There's a memory for you.

My Father had a profound influence on me, he was a lunatic.

Until the R's got promoted I used to think football was all about the premier league, it's not, it's about man utd. Football for real fans is like cd's and books, they are still around but are slowly dying off. Football is now for the tv audience which is these sad tw*ts that follow mainly manure or if they want to be a little diverse another so called big club.

It's definitely been an education being in the Prem these last two years. I thought it might be like coming home, given that most of my formative years in the 80s/90s were spent watching us in the top league, but it's been like turning up at your old local after a few years abroad to find out it's been done up, beer's now £8 a pint, and it's overrun with patronising cu*ts you don't recognise informing you how 'awesome' your ruined local is.

Still, we've been so crap I can't really work out if I'm just bitter.

This can all be summed up as the difference between a fan and a supporter.

We are supporters, we support the club. Fans just sit on their arse and buy a shirt every season.
