Because Wimbledon is the preeminent tennis tournament in the World and Goolagong was an indigenous Australian and those people did not have the same advantages as the settlers, Barty although not in exactly the same boat but she does have some indigenous blood, with Barty looking up to Goolagong, it's an interesting story.

She lives half an hour from me in Ipswich, the media in the U.K. are funny making a major deal of her Aboriginal blood line and making comparisons to Goolagong, which are quite frankly ridiculous that displays a complete lack of understanding.

Goolagong is directly from a Wiradjuri family, poor background (farming I believe) and certainly faced prejudice back in the day.

Ash’s mother Josie is a radiographer who is either from the U.K. or parents are and her father Robert works for the Government, but think he has some generational links to an Aboriginal background.

While Ash is extremely proud of her heritage, I’m sure she would be the first to put anyone right who was genuinely suggesting that her situation was similar to Goolagongs or that she had any barriers in her way at all.

She was playing professional cricket not so long ago too, sporting wise she has had the world at her feet for a long time and the support (both financial and public) from the very beginning.

A worthy world number 1, a wonderful ambassador for tennis and after meeting her several times, one of the nicest people on the tour. But let’s not pretend it’s some sort of hard luck story and start making comparisons.
