I notice that Ireland, Scotland and England are doing well in the cricket.

The question's probably been asked before but ..................................... If you are Welsh and a cricket supporter why do you not want there to be a Wales cricket team ? Are you happy supporting a team that is the England team in reality ? The shirt has ENGLAND and three lions on it. And the team is ALWAYS referred to as England. When they play in Sophia Gardens the huge signs outside say 'THIS IS ENGLAND' .

I don't understand it.

I d rather Wales not compete as minnows or as a minor counties team ,as they once were.

Just enjoy the competition

It basically comes down to finances. By being a member of the England and Wales cricket board more money works its way down to grass roots cricket in Wales than if we were independent.

Well said John.

I certainly never support the England cricket team.

Here is an old quote for those who still bow down to the English crown as their unthinking default position.

‘You are called upon in defiance of shame, of honour, of truth, to deny the sufferings under which you groan, and to flatter the persecution which tramples you under foot’.

In football terms i would rather lose 8 nil every game as wales, then play a single game as TeamGB.

Shirley that should read the EWCB.

See the difference.
Wales means nothing to them - and it shows.

You say just enjoy the competition. By which I imagine you mean the quality of the cricket, that you'd rather watch top level cricket than lower league type stuff.

But you could argue that the Welsh football team have been minnows for most of the last 63 years since the 1958 World Cup. But no one says lets dump them and support England because they play at a MUCH higher standard.

The same could be said for the Swans. They could also have been classed as minnows when they were in the old fourth division. The standard of football was crap for most of the 70's and large parts of the 80's and 90's. But none of us said i'm going to support Man U, Liverpool etc because i'll enjoy the competition (some did/do of course). We stayed because they're our Club.

I don't follow cricket but I would have thought that Ireland and Scotland could also be classed as minnows. But they seem to be competing pretty well, certainly in the current competition.

I don't know anything about the finances of grass roots cricket so can't really argue using numbers.

But the ECB has to fund grass roots cricket in England and Wales. So if the funding was spread evenly Wales would get about 6% of whatever the ECB generates. A simple argument I know but I would have thought that an Independent WCB would be able to generate a reasonable amount of revenue from general income plus sponsorship. And 100% of it would go back into grass roots cricket.

There is quite a bit more than that involved in the finances. My grandson plays age group county cricket and one of the coaches explained it to me but it was very complicated.

This throws a different angle on why Wales does not play international cricket independently and is worth a read.

So Cardiff gets an England test match every year….?

If we had a Wales team, then Cardiff would be sure to get more games. No ?

Not minnows in that context no.

Wales can beat many teams not in the top echelon.

In cricket, we wouldn’t beat Netherlands
