| My End Of Season Reflection 06:58 - May 11 with 339 views | STID2017 | First half of the season was very much getting into the new system. Going into the January window we were good enough to push on to the play offs if we had been backed. Wolf and Christie were good acquisitions. Fisher, Burns and Ogteba waste of a squad number ( no reflection on the last two as players, just clearly not rated by Martin) Failure to back Martin with what he needed / wanted cost us, although Fisher for me brings Martin's judgement into question. Kicking onwards from there, I feel Martin should have comprised his style and formation for the rest of the season, before kicking on next season with what ( in theory ) should be his squad. Good to see some consistency prior to the Forest game, but overall let ourselves down when it mattered ( too many draws that could easily have been wins ) Was never sure which " Swans " would turn up. Key for next season is to retain as many key players as possible ( Piroe, Obafemi, Cabango and Downes obviously), get players in we need (Allen, Christie and Wolf, together with two more centre backs and a new keeper ) and bring on some of our younger players to feature regularly. My prediction for next season is automatic promotion, although a lot will depend on the transfer windows. | |

We spent more on players this season than any other at this level in our history, except for the one exception which was the season after relegation with Potter. Is it 14 players we got in this season? I believe that is the most we have signed in this division, maybe joint most in any season since relegation. But I commend you for your prediction, people openly predicting success next season have been few and far between recently. They have gone very quiet indeed.

I guess I am questioning the signing of Burns and Ogteba, who Martin didn't seem to want, and a couple of players he did want that weren't signed ( the one who went to Celtic and the MK Dons player we are said to be chasing again ?). I think it is not so much financial backing as giving the manager the players he wants ? This close season is of course may make or break Martin's season. If he is given the players he wants / needs and succeeds then we will all be happy. If he isn't then may be a repeat of last season. If he is backed but fails then like most I feel the mid season review in the enforced winter break may see a change in management

I can't remember the last time a manager got all the players they wanted, it isn't really how football works anymore, there are committees that decide these things. Its a mix of what the manager wants and what suits the clubs finances. He clearly wanted Laird and Fisher and got them, but then had to make to with some other signings that may not have been his. Same as last season with the American loans in January, I highly doubt Coops was banging the door down for them.

Agree we are being run on a sustainable model and as such certainly not viable to spend willy nilly. Of course it is and will be discussed by various people in the club, including Martin. I think the manager has to present a list of players or types of players he wants then rely on others to get what he needs ? If Burns and Ogteba were the types of players Martin wanted, then I can only think they didn't impress in training or in the few appearances they made ?
