My parents have a virgin box but all they watch is channels BBC1 to Channel 5 and the plus 1, they like catch-up and my mum records the soaps, they also have internet but thats it.
The box is playing up, it wont reboot so we have now found out what they are paying, and its an arm and a leg.
Any one got a recommendation for any alternates please?

Do they need internet? If not just go for freeview..
Also firstly, you could just ring Virgin, say I'm leaving, you will most probably get put through to an Indian call centre first, who I find these days, give you nothing, tell them straight put me through to retentions, work out first what new customers to VM are paying for what your parents package is, and aim for around that mark, also kick off if they have been paying over the odds for a while.
If no joy, I would say take a look at sky, bt, but I would say they are all the same, once the new customer offer expires they always hike their prices right up.
If you do need broadband, most prob you do, saying about the catch up, use a comparision site something like this https://www.moneysavingexpert. then use a smart tv or firestick to get access to catch up.
And also to record the soaps without the likes of Virgin/Sky boxes, with freeview only you would need something like this https://www.argos.co.uk/produc cheapest on Argos 129.

Sounds like all they need is the internet connection.
We pay an arm and a leg but we have every channel, free phne calls all day every day, Virgin mobile and a very high speed internet connection, in fact our upload speed with Virgin is 32MBPS which is 3 times what Sky's download speed was here when we moved in.
96 quid mind, I was going to downgrade when the first contract ended but then I was out and my wife took the call, we ended up with more! netflix through Virgin. | |
