Spoke to my Indian doctor once about this as we played cricket together He is grateful for Britain, that s England,Wales ,Scotland giving India Law and indeed cricket itself. The country was a disparate collection of states
It's one way of looking at it, some other places were allegedly civilised and broke down when on these isles we were still living in mud huts, some of those other places went rapidly backwards at some point in their history.

Two sides to every story of course ….
Do you know when GDP started being measured?
Anyway, India had been an industrial giant for over a millenia, then yes, the British came and things got worse but it wasn't only because of British rule. India's decline wasn't as bad as Carlson makes out because he leaves out a very important bit of info, this decline started in the late 17 Century during the Industrial revolution (circa 1760) when India's percentage decline was largely because of the increased output from Western nations. India's output didn't drop that much just its percentage share did.

Probably more than Russia in the Worlds of science, medicine, industrial revolution, law and order, freedom and and liberating Europe twice.
Grant you your Russia are much better at mass murder, abusing human rights, murdering and suppressing their own citizens.
The thread is about India, nothing else.
Russia was the first modern country to abolish slavery, yes they had serfdom, but we had appealing poverty in Victorian times
Russia liberated Europe of the NAZIS more than any other country. They killed more Germans that all the allies put together and some more.I do realise history is not your strong point
Would you like to do a body count of the victims of the British empire. India, S Africa, Ireland,Afghanistan, Africa and so on. The Russians are novices compared to us, and don't get me started on the US.

Russia conspired with the Nazis to carve Poland up between them. They were quite chummy until Hitler turned on them.
Most of the territory "liberated" by them in the end simply swapped one murderous regime for another and wouldn't see actual freedom until 1989.
Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

It wasn't the Russians though, that enslaved millions in concentration camps, ethnically cleansed Europe and forced millions into slave labour and mass deportations.
Yes, much of Easter Europe was under Russian influence, but that's to be expected for the price they had to pay for defeating the NAZIS.

Just to put things into perspective, and to see just how mighty the British empire was, just 30,000 British soldiers and civil servants controlled India at the time with a population of over 300 million, that would be like the population of aberdare controlling the United States of America today.

The Romans had already shwon that the best organised and disciplned side can control the vast majority. What the British did was basically the same as the Romans but with better weapons.

Just 14k controlled the colonies in America, and we know what happened there

I know you're a troll, but you do need to try harder.
Like the Russians did with their Gulag Archipelago.

This taken from a publication from 1887) The Benefits of British Rule for India In the Cause of Humanity: Abolition of sati and infanticide. Destruction of Gangs, Thugs, and other such pests of Indian society. Allowing remarriage of Hindu widows. In the Cause of Civilization: Education, both male and female, though yet only partial. Leading gradually to the destruction of superstition, and many moral and social evils. Resuscitation of India's own noble literature, refined by the enlightenment of the West. Politically: Peace and order. Freedom of speech and press. Higher political knowledge and aspirations. Improvement of government in the native states. Security of life and property. Services of educated administrators, who have achieved these results. Materially: Loans for railways and irrigation. Development of a few valuable products, such as indigo, tea, coffee, silk, etc. Increase of exports. Telegraphs. Generally: Growing desire to treat India equitably. Good intentions. No nation on earth has ever had the opportunity of achieving such a glorious work. If I have omitted any item of importance, I will gladly insert it. I appreciate what England has done for India, and I know that it is only in British hands that her glory can be accomplished.
