Smart bit of work by the backroom team. Joel was offered a generous deal by Swansea. A significant pay rise. He had is value and the club did not go over it. Martin pressed them to increase like he did with Patterson.

Lesson learned. With footballers extra pay does not necessarily mean more output, In fact the reverse is often true. This is seen with Joel's England u17 team mates Hudson-Odei and Brewster. Even Sancho struggling. McEachran, Eyoma, Kirby, Oakely Boothe are low league pros now.

At Swansea he turned from an academy hopeful into a hardened Championship footballer. He grafted hard with some claiming he had inadequate natural ability needed to be a Swansea player. I felt his rough edges were a benefit as Swansea were pretty soft under Martin in his first season. He replaced Sorinola who had no rough edges.

Much the same was said about Goykeres who Swansea could have signed for £1.5m. Coventy will hope Joel matches Viktor in economic terms. A generous 4 year deal.
