If the marbles had not been removed when they had they almost certainly would have been destroyed forever. The Greeks couldn’t look after them, the Parthenon was little more than a ruin at the time after a load of munitions exploded and had been used as a mosque for the best part of 350 years. |  |

At the time Elgin removed them, it was to poreserve them. Elgin was worried that the Ottoman Empire, which ruled Greece at the time, would be indifferent to the damage of important artworks in the temples.
As for reparations, are YOU drunk? Returning them should be enough. After all they would likely have been destroyed if they had been left there. We should never have kept them, they should have gone back decades ago. | | | |

Just to be clear , they were not stolen and the British Museum has the proof of deeds provided to them 200 years ago . | |
