You can always depend on those in power to come up with more ways of making money and taking money from us poor plebs. One even admits we won't know the full impacts of climate change for many years, even though many aspects of warming are delayed so could in fact be even worse than we imagine. I don't see the relevance of comparing them to celebrities really, We're about to enter one of the largest El Nino events ever, possibly the biggest. It'll kill people. Things will only get worse..

None of whom are respected in their chosen fields, really ? The reason I chose celebrities as an example of a group was that some folk hang onto their every word. You do know what the El Niño affect is and how often in varying degrees it occurs? I see you’ve fallen into the trap of scaremongering by saying it’s possibly the biggest , people will die and it’ll only get worse , it may be the biggest this century (we’ve just entered into our 4th cycle in this one) people die nearly every time because of weather patterns caused by El Niño so nothing new there and no one can predict accurately whether it’s going to get better or worse , both of which have happened dependant on how strong the one previous was.

There's enough of a historical record to track the progress of it by looking at past events. I do have some scepticism about how much influence humanity is having on the process, especially as most Government's response to it is to tax people and keep paying the same scientists who produce the reports that things are getting worse. Scientists without Government funding tell a different story. I don't think the proponents of Climate Change/Global Warming/Imminent Ice Age help themselves by continually changing their story and getting their predictions wrong.

| Climate change , a con? on 18:22 - May 8 with 2744 views | ReslovenSwan1 | It is the wrong question. It is definitely not a con. The climate is always changing and always will. We had the Ice age 12,000 years go middle ages warm period and it was nippy about a century ago. Thames used to freeze over. No doubt the Tawe as well. The climate has warmed anecdotally in my own observations of heavy snows in the 1960s. It was freezing in my student days in Birmingham. 1980s. I recall a -15c for about a week. The question is MAN MADE climate change. This will only cause warming not cooling. Do we as humans want to do things that actually warms the planet or do we want to not affect the climate at all? Clearly we do not want to create further warming and should endeavour to be carbon neutral. This means we act in a way to absorb carbon as fast a we release it it to the air and water. Our gas reserves in the North Sea are currently being stored for free in our seabed rock. If we extracted it all now woe would have to store it at a high cost. Over the last decade oil and gas have been cheap. Oil junkies are like spoilt children who have money to buy sweets so spend all their money on sweats immediately because they can with no plan for the future. It make no difference on the global price and we do not need it at that price. we can wait until time of shortages. China and India and Pakistan want to breathe in clean air and live decent live like us and will follow our lead. What s the point of middle class wealth if you air is bad. Not every one wants to live in London. China was embarrassed about poor air quality in the Olympic and polluted water ways. It is true they have many coal g fired power stations but no one mentions the 1 billion trees they have planted in the north. I will have to research if their outfall is scrubbed. Drax burns wood notionally from sustainable forest sources. "Biomass". One like to think the UK Government is able to audit the suppliers. Naturally these days auditing is questioned, Some things like commercial airlines engineering are so well audited accidents are extremely rare. It can and should be assumed as valid. Jobs have gone of course. There was an aluminium plant on Anglesey. It had a very high electricity useage. They had a long term deal with the Government electricity board and took its electricity from Wylfa Nuclear power station. When it shut so did the aluminum works as the deal ended. I can see no reason why big employers cannot get lower electricity cost for bulk purchases especially in the new era of modular nuclear reactors wind and tidal power. Welsh politician are keen to be green but we get no benefit for green energy. Westminster must give us the jobs for the energy Wales creates. . | |

Nope, none of them. One is only describing the effectiveness of conservation efforts to save polar bears. The others respectability may come from the climate change denial people. If you want to compare them to a celebrity watch the tribute to Sir David Attenborough.

Predictions are wrong most of the time, the science behind them may well not be. If a prediction is correct it's nothing more than educated guess. The problem is most of those predictions regarding climate change are now coming true. There's probably more to come.
| Climate change , a con? on 22:25 - May 8 with 2645 views | JACKMANANDBOY | There are three major environmental threats. Habitat destruction and extinctions - One we lose a species we never get them back, ecosystems are distorted and lose diversity. We have lost something like 40 percent of the insect population in the last 23 years through habitat destruction, agricultural monocultures and urbanisation. If ecosystems fail that's the end for us all Pollution- including forever chemicals and micro plastics. How much microplastic can a human kidney or brain absorb? CO2 - A naturally occurring part of the atmosphere, can be offset through increasing the vegetation on the planet for example. Desalination is cheap and easy these days there is plenty of scope to extend areas that are currently desert in ocean margins. So we have three big threats, the only one getting constant attention is the one where you can sell lots of things to lots of people, cynical I hear you say, but it is true. Insect populations are down 60 percent in the UK in 25 years, when was the last time a minister stood up and said we have a problem? So I'm only getting a selected story of the true position, that makes me question why and I'm not happy just to take what I'm given, there is more to it Rather like the war in Gaza, I have a look around the World and see that there are 110 armed conflicts the scale of suffering in Sudan, China, Congo, Nigeria Myanmar, etc is enormous but we hear very little. Again you have to ask why or just take what you are given. | |

Lots of people rely on their smartphones these days, many use Facebook, Twitter or TickTock where algorithms decide what you get to see, somebody else decides what you get to see, it's incredible that people do not want to be in charge of their own judgements or are not curious enough to explore what is presented. I have a friend who used to only read the Guardian, I brought him a copy of the Times and went through each story. He read the Guardian article and then the Times article, after each story I asked him what actually happened her? It only took three stories for him to say 'I see what you mean'. I explained that I only asked on question what actually happened? We went on to look at account of those stories from the Washington Post, Sydney Morning Herald and Times of India.......and guess what same subject but widely different takes.

There's probably a deeper reason why The Guardian website is still completely free to read whilst other media sources are increasingly disappearing behind paywalls. Got to get the "right" narrative out there.

It is noticeably milder in the winters and hot summer days are hotter. I have not seen many hard frosts but no the coast for some time ..

More so evidence that the temperatures are changing like when it rains and there’s loads of different types of rain, then it snows a bit then the sun comes out, then there’s the wind, blowy stuff, clouds etc.

The climate is always changing and always has, The issue is man made climate change. Industry churning out carbon creates global warming using fossil fuel which is the sun s energy for millions of years ago being released very quickly. Carbon neutrality is just basis common sense . Human should not create problems for itself by not working in harmony with the environment. Wales has plenty of scope for planting trees on the moorlands and making more money and creating forestry jobs. Ideally they would be hard wood which is more valuable but less economic.

What happens when the trees eventually die, where does the co2 go? It's co2 not carbon btw. Being pedantic I know, but there's a huge difference

It's released very gradually over decades, it then becomes part of the carbon cycle and gets absorbed by the trees that replaced it. Think how many acorns are produced by an oak tree. Each one a potential new tree. Trees emit Co2 at night too. Of course this is where industrial deforestation is a problem. [Post edited 11 May 18:13]

Even if it is somewhere in the middle (there evidence doesn't support that) we've got to do everything single thing we can to stop it. Every climate change event has caused a massive extinction event, we've already started this one. We should stop it before it gets to us.

It isn"t AN event, it is a process that takes a long time. Besides that, we cannot stop it, it is in motion right now and what with Russia, India, China and the USA still pumping out masses of CO2 its too late to reverse it because reducing the output from where it is now will take years and the tipping point may well have been passed.

But there have been many through geological time. It's happening now, and it's too late to reverse any damage especially as lots of impacts are delayed. But it's not too late to stop it getting to worst case scenario territory which is catastrophic.

We have almost certainly breached the 1.5 degree rise and current predictions are a rise of 2.7 to 3 degrees which is considered catastrophic.
