As I understand it there will be six groups of four in France with the top two from each group going through to the knockout stages and four of the six third placed teams also going through.

At the end of the group matches, the 24 teams will have been reduced to 16 teams for the knock-out phase.
So they play 36 matches in the groups just to get rid of 8 teams? There are going to be too many games which will basically just be friendlies, with nothing depending on them. |  |
