Ok so I think most people figured out this show was going to be a huge steaming pile of orc crap when they started talking about “reimagining Tolkien in a way that fits with the modern world”. Announcing Sir Lenny Henry as king of the hobbits. Leaked reports that Elrond is gay now and battling with trying to work out his gender identity despite being a widower with three kids in the books. A possible romance between Sauron and Celebrimbor. The list goes on.
But now the actual show is out Amazon has been forced to switch off their user reviews after receiving an unprecedented number of negative reviews. Most of the criticism is aimed at the character Galadriel played by welsh actress Mordydd Clark who does not at all resemble the wise ethereal and magical character that oozes power and commands respect in the books. She is now a moody, angry unlikeable sulking and vicious warrior elf who just wants to slice up everything in sight with her dagger because that’s what filmmakers think makes a strong woman these days.
Honestly this show is so far away from anything Tolkien wrote it should be canned immediately. And it’s only going to get worse. The only positive is the hilarious memes it has spawned.

I've watched the first 2 episodes. It is really slow. Second episode was marginally better than the first
Are you a fan of the books? I reckon Amazon thought they could just cobble together any old crap and target the audience of people not familiar with the works of Tolkien. Some of the errors in the first few episodes just show they know nothing or don’t give a toss about the books. I mean two Durins living at the same time? All the Durins are supposed to be the same dwarf reincarnated over and over.
And Galadriel just hopping on a boat to Valinor in the second age? She’s still under the Doom of Mandos and isn’t allowed to return. That’s the whole point of her “I have passed the test, I will go into the west and remain Galadriel” speech after Frodo offers her the ring in Fellowship of the Ring.
I won't watch it then, if Gandalf the Pink turns up it'll just spoil it completely. Maybe that's as GundaBAD as it gets...or is that more Mazarbulshite?
I really hate it though, when people take a book and "re-imagine" it to make it fit with "modern values"
When and where a book is set, specially when it is fantasy, is important to the context. You can't just change characters to be modern or PC.
What will they do in the future, how about tinkering with Harry Potter, will they make the Weasley brothers into transgender sisters? Or will Hermione Grainger become Theyione Grainger?

The frustration is that they’ve had virtually a blank cheque book and all the possibilities in the world to come up with something completely amazing. And they’ve spunked it. This is the best they’ve come up with? I feel so sorry for the welsh girl who is playing Galadriel, she’s described in the books as “beautiful and terrible”. Well she’s definitely beautiful but her character is absolutely terrible. it’s the role of a lifetime and they’ve just written her to be awful. She’s got no chance.

it's happening everywhere though. We see period dramas reflecting modern "values" on the BBC.
Life is sadly not just going but gone that way. Literature from a liftime ago when society was very different is being....brought up to date!
I find it deeply odd that people give two shits whether or not there are black Elves or Hobbits. AFAIK Tolkein didn't make any reference one way or another (Hobbits with terrible Oirish accents are another thing entirely).
Having said that, I've seen the first two episodes of the new show and I'm not really sold on it yet. It's very pretty but they're clearly planning to f*ck with the timelines. The rise and fall of Numenor took thousands of years, yet with characters named Isildur and an obvious wizard who may or may not be Gandalf coming down on a meteor then things are clearly going to be compressed pretty quickly.
Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

I must admit, It wouldn't be my cup of tea, I haven't even watched the films yet, but it seems Amazon have turned off the ratings for the tv series to combat fake reviews.?

This is basic basic stuff.
I've read the books and I like the books. But, my level of knowledge of it stops at knowing that there are Orcs, Hobbits an Elves in it. I don't like it to the level of knowing who was alive when or any names except the main characters

Some people get very wrapped in things mind!
Personally I like the books, I enjoyed the films but I'm not so deeply into it. I tried reading the Silmarillion but gave up.
There are people out there who go to conventions all decked out as Elves and Orcs, Gandalfs and Bilbo's galore. It's not my thing either.

I love Jackson's movies. I watch the extended editions at least once a year back to back (usually pick a rainy day for that). I've probably watched the behind the scenes stuff on the DVD's almost as much. They're perfect adaptations in that they convey the story without being either overly loyal to the source material or dismissive of it. I much prefer the films to the books.
I've read The Hobbit. It's...OK. Not great, but not bad. The films weren't great either.
The Silmarillion took me three or four goes before I finished it. Would make excellent film/TV (probably TV) but would need someone willing to take an axe to it in the same way as Jackson did with LOTR.

To be fair you always have to cut a book to make a film of it, you can't include everything faithfully in the film or it becomes a very long winded series. The 3 films were long but if he'd been competely loyal to the books there could have been 3 films per book!
