In defence of referees. 19:57 - Apr 23 with 1441 viewsGwyn737

Came across the highlights of yesterday’s Blackburn vs Preston game earlier.

The Blackburn striker, Szmodics, dived to meet a cross like superman and punched the ball into the net with a fully outstretched arm. It was blatant and was rightly disallowed.

The player then chased the referee around, screaming at him about the decision. The rest of the game had the usual rubbish of players/coaching teams claiming throw ins that clearly weren’t theirs and grabbing body parts that weren’t touched in an attempt to ‘win’ fouls.

So. Although of course it’s frustrating when refs muck up, where is the players and coaching teams high ground to criticise a ref when they’ve spent the whole game trying to trick him?

If a player chases the referee around screaming about a decision then the referee has it within his power to caution and then potentially dismiss said player. If he doesn't use those powers then it's his own fault if things get worse after that.

The rules are already in place to cut out 95% of player misbehaviour. Referees need the stones to enforce them and the governing bodies need to back them up.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

For whatever reason, refs aren’t doing it.

Maybe a directive from above is what’s needed.

Absolutely.

If teams are finishing games with eight players because three of them have been sent off for dissent then it will change. At the moment officials are doing the equivalent of asking them nicely to stop. Won't make a difference until players are damn sure who is in charge.

Football needs to be a bit more like rugby, only the captain speaks to ref, players who chops decisions can get a card and will most certainly give 10 yards away. FIFA, UEFA, FA, FAW etc all need to come out and support the refs and if that means the prima donnas and other superstars getting sent off every few weeks then so be it.

Watching todays semi final made me cringe and laugh at the same time.

Manures players were a fvcking embarrassment, diving all over the place, feigning injuries.

My eldest played in a brutal u16s RL match 4 hours earlier, those young adults embarrassed those 'professionals' with their bravery and toughness
