New goalkeeper rules for time wasting 17:51 - Jul 28 with 1391 viewsKeithHaynes

Some may have missed it.

Pro Ref, which manages the division’s match officials, stated: “English football has received approval from the International Football Association Board (IFAB) to introduce a new goalkeeper injury trial for the 2026-27 season as part of its ongoing commitment to maintaining the pace and flow of matches.

“The trial, championed collectively by Pro Ref, The FA, Premier League, EFL, WSL Football and the National League, will be implemented across the men’s and women’s professional game in England and is designed to address occasions where goalkeeper injuries have been used to disrupt momentum, slow the game down or create opportunities for tactical instruction.”

The rule means in the event a game is stopped due to a goalkeeper injury, the team’s manager/head coach must nominate an outfield player to leave the pitch for a minimum of one minute from the restart of play.

Exceptions include:

If a free-kick is awarded for a foul on the goalkeeper and they immediately require treatment
If a goalkeeper and outfield player collide and need attention
If a goalkeeper is bleeding
Explaining the introduction of the trial, the Premier League said: “There have been times when a goalkeeper has sat down and signalled for the physio, and his team have used the break as a competitive advantage.

“The aim could be to waste time, or to slow down an opponent’s momentum, or to enable all the outfield players to go to the technical area and get tactical instructions from their manager. The goalkeeper then gets back up and carries on.

“The aim of the trial is to ensure genuine injuries continue to receive appropriate medical attention while removing any potential sporting advantage.”

A great believer in taking anything you like to wherever you want to.

It’ll continue to happen. Being a player short for just one minute is not a massive disadvantage. Many teams will just take it if it means disrupting momentum and relieving the pressure.

Poll: We all dream of a managerial team of Alan Tates?

Are we going to see the time limit on throw ins, I thought it worked quite well in the world cup and kept the game flow and left the thrower with little options to throw the ball down the line often gaining territory further down the pitch catching the opposition out of position, seemed a better ball to play than the dreaded short throw to feet causing congestion and backward passes or punts down the pitch into no one.
