On your earlier question about why people prefer one over the other… There’s a dangerous team sport in a lot of cultures, but as they’re all more complicated and risky to play than football, they struggle for the same casual attention and increasingly player numbers. As to which is the better of Union, League, American Football, it’s much more about family, place and tradition (all things being eroded to the benefit of football). The reason why UHT milk exists, lack of refrigeration in poor hot European areas, doesn’t apply anymore but it’s as popular in the same areas as it ever was, because people give kids the milk their parents gave them and so on, setting their tastes for life. Give them fresh milk (obviously a better product!) and they’ll think it’s rotten. I look at AFL and see all the things that look wrong about it, the shape of the ball, the field, the posts, the scoring system, how hitting the post and own goals are no big deal, the vests…and there’s 90,000 people in the ground going potty. Had a family do I couldn’t get out of, so sorry I missed it. They’re an amazing side, not the most talented squad in Super League but they just keep coming. |

Someday this war’s gonna end. Also the original Frank Burns in MASH. Can’t say I remember this, starring Robert Duvall, Brian Cox, Michael Keaton and…Ally McCoist. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ [Post edited 16 Feb 21:10]

Tango & Cash must have wondered why Ghislaine kept chanting 3-0 at them. |

Jake Cooper of Millwall is always horrible against us. Azeez of Millwall and Egeli of Ipswich gave us nightmares. [Post edited 13 Feb 22:04]

V’Landys would do it, but the clannish owners exasperate him. It’s like the war in Union, should the game be run from the top as a single business or from the bottom as a competition between warring tribes? Of course if the TV companies walk away, they’re on their own again. |

Great finish by York. I know Mikey Lewis isn’t as thick as he looks, but was he doing? I knew nothing about York’s team before tonight, I was amazed to see Ben Jones-Bishop about 16 years after I used to watch him at Harlequins. I haven’t followed the London story this year, is Lockyear seriously involved? And have you seen Regan Campbell-Gillard in Tooting Sainsbury’s yet? All I know from the NRL podcasts is that everyone thinks he’s a prick. |

Super League starts tonight in shocking conditions but the 4G spoils the fun, NRL just weeks away. York holding their own for the moment , I used to coach Union with a York fanatic, I hope they can hold their own this season.

I've been favourably compared to Warren Buffett at work. I'm taller than him, and younger. |

I’d forgotten that Wigan Athletic won the FA Cup as recently as 2013. There’s always further to fall (though there was always less to Wigan than Leicester as a football city). |

Very similar to Gerry, then. Players and fans at Spurs are deluded about their own status and significance, but it’s always the managers fault. From little bits and pieces I’ve heard, he’s an exceptionally nice man. A friend works in security at Brentford and said he was first in, last out, but he knew the names of all the staff and talked to them like they were as important to the club as the players. He lived near me in Sheen, and the two guys in the butcher’s, one Fulham and one QPR, used to pull his leg every time he came in and he was happy to go along with it. |

I imagine they're preparing a special roll-out grassless "Championship" pitch for next season. [Post edited 10 Feb 21:00]
