Should Britain go down the federal route ?
at 14:11 19 Feb 2020

Although interestingly (or maybe not), the most northerly point of the Republic of Ireland is further north than the most northerly point of Northern Ireland...

Fair point about an increasing drive to report all incidents, but I think the strength of the impetus behind this varies from hospital to hospital.

In this case, none of the three hospitals mentioned in the article are secure units. The last assault was just before Christmas and the judge has given him bail. So it does not appear that he is unwell enough for the court to consider a sec 37/41 or suchlike. Obviously these are assumptions based on the information in that one article, but it doesn’t feel as though these assaults are as a direct result of a serious mental illness (in my opinion).

Well if the case has gone this far then it is clearly felt he had full capacity around his actions. Therefore the fact he was on a mental health ward at the time is largely irrelevant. This is someone who is on trial for assaulting a number of people including NHS staff and police. Based on that I can’t see anything wrong with reporting it as such.

When people with mental health problems assault staff on a mental health ward, if the assault is a direct result of their illness which means they lack the capacity to know what they are doing, then it is unusual for staff to report this to the police, and very unlikely to progress to court. However, plenty of patients in mental health hospitals retain full awareness of their actions and know that they are wrong. In these instances police are much more likely to be called, and the fact this has gone to court would suggest this is the case in this instance.

Bristol City say NO !

About time.

What will be interesting is if an opposition team put the ball out if one of their own players is down, whether or not Bristol City will give the ball back to them.

Knife Crime

If there is an association between exclusions and knife crime then I personally would interpret it the other way around, ie the people who are more likely to engage in knife crime are more likely to be the type of person who might get excluded.

The whole thing is multifactorial, though, and any one thing that seems to be linked will be more correlation than causation.

You seem to have unrealistic expectations of our players. We are a championship side. Celina is clearly our most talented player, but if he turned in 10/10 performances every week then he’d never have come to us. Creative players can often be very in and out, so some inconsistency is a trade off for what he does offer us. (FWIW I don’t feel he particularly went missing tonight).

Yes we should have won tonight, but we robbed a point off them in the away fixture so that sort of evens things out. We have a young side who try to play football the right way. We’re unbeaten this year and have a reasonable chance of reaching the FA Cup QF. So stop fvcking whinging and enjoy the ride...

OTJ’s podcast - The Longman’s Football World - is well worth a listen. Plenty of banter with Leon and others on this, and some interesting stories and insights.

Whoscored also has Leon as having no significant strengths and says his passing and tackling are weak. Not sure how much you can read into a website like that...

I wonder if we’re still owed money from the Siggy deal. In which case they could offset and loan fee/wages etc against money owed...

Well there we go then. May as well not sign anyone.
Alternatively we try and sign players who are more likely to be successful - based on criteria such as previous championship experience or being top of GP’s wish list, rather than just looking at how many goals they’ve scored.

Any signing could potentially be a flop. Judging level of risk purely on goals scored is pointless for a player whose role isn’t goal scoring. It’s akin to Vincent Tan demanding to know why their keeper hadn’t scored any goals a few years back.

And Leon only scored 11 goals in 484 appearances. So what’s your point?

Throwing acid in a three year old kids face

No offence taken. I think it’s just that the public perception of “insanity” is so distorted from actual medical definitions and this grates with my naturally pedantic nature

I would be surprised if those responsible for this have anything that is treatable, and should receive custodial sentences rather than hospital orders (although I can’t say that their punishment will be anywhere near as severe as it should be for what they’ve done, but that’s another debate).

And I am saying that committing heinous acts is in no way a definition of mental illness. I have no idea if they are sane or not, but I do know that many people commit atrocities as a result of conscious decisions not due to mental illness.

It might be more palatable to imagine that things like this are attributable to mental illness, but actually many people are just bad people.

Crass comments. To assume they are mentally ill just perpetuates the stigma around mental illness. People with mental illness are more likely to be the victim of violence than the perpetrator. I would imagine that these low-lives are just evil, plain and simple.

Swansea to appoint Technical Director

Fair point.
However, I can’t see us relinquishing total control of recruitment to the incoming manager, and I stand by my point that a DOF type system can work if done correctly.
