Too good to go down

Do you feel the same when you see the likes of Derby County and Bolton Wanderers in a league below us?

It always amuses me when posters use phrases like "most of us" or "the vast majority of us". You can only know that by conducting a statistically significant poll of the fans. I presume you didn't do that.

Personally, I don't want to get promoted playing turgid football.

No.

Imagine having to watch Luton style football every week.

xG against
at 09:45 21 Sep 2023

To be clear, I said that I didn't know whether he was correct that we were 5th in the xGA table. I was merely pointing out that being at the top end of the xGA table is good (because it's an upside down table) - which some people didn't seem to understand.

Also, different models calculate xGA (and xG for that matter) in different ways so it depends where he's getting his stats from.

Either way, I'd be quite happy to see the back of him.

I'm no fan of Duff but he's right about xGA. I don't know why people are struggling with this.

xGA is a measure of how many goal chances you allow the opposition. A low number is good, the lower it is the higher you are in the table. So if we're fifth in the table, that's pretty good. We're currently the fifth best in the league at restricting good chances for the opposition.

I can't confirm that we're fifth but he has analysts that tell him this.

On the flip side, I bet our xG is really low. Which is bad.

Why is it managers cant see what we fans see

I'd be amazed if any manager listens to, let alone takes "advice" from, fans.

I'm confused. Some people were complaining that Martin was playing 5 at the back when clearly we were playing 3. Some people were complaining that we were playing 3 and wanted to play 4.

So which is it with Duff? Darling, Cabango and Wood are clearly a back 3. Key and Ashby spending most of their time in advanced positions don't make it a back 5.

Many teams play 3 at the back now, and the reasons are obvious. Firstly, you can easily switch to 3 when in possession and 5 when not, if you feel like it. Secondly, many teams only play one up front, sometimes two, so having a back 5 against one striker makes absolutely no sense. You end up being overrun in midfield. Even 4 against one makes no sense.

And to suggest (not you) that that the manager doesn't know what's going on on the field is laughable, IMHO.

The answer is obvious, surely. They know more than us.

Goalkeepers playing out from the back
at 16:17 14 Aug 2023

They changed the rules specifically to encourage playing out from the back and the pitches are so good these days there's little excuse not to.

Long goal kicks are pretty low percentage and invariably give possession away. I was amazed when Rushworth kicked long on Saturday. I hope we're not going back to that.

The only problem I have with us doing it is (or at least last couple of seasons) when we beat the press we need to take full advantage and drive forward. Too many times we'd beat the press and faff around in midfield (Grimes especially) - and let the opposition get back behind the ball.

A back 4
at 13:31 26 Jul 2023

I've never quite understood the obsession with playing 4 at the back. Many teams play 3 these days, and we have done ourselves, going back to the Toshack days, when it was quite revolutionary. 3 at the back is more flexible because it allows you to play 3 when in possession and 5 when out of possession, for example.

We have a couple of problems to solve though. Cabango seems to struggle in a 3, because he doesn't have enough pace to play left or right, and he's not dominant enough in the air to play centre. Oh, and he's not very good in possession. I'm no fan of Cabango (that's no secret, nice bloke though) so I'd rather bench him and find someone who's comfortable in the formation.

The other problem is we don't really have wingbacks. But again, I'd rather fix that problem than just play a formation because that's all our players can play.

There's a better video on saintsweb. Very similar to David Beckham against Turkey all those years ago. Standing foot gave way.

In other news: Saints fans complaining about the style of play. And they desperately want Piroe.

I may be wrong here but because they only spent one season in the PL (promoted 2019-20, relegated 2020-21) they only get two years of parachute payments. Don't quote me on that though.

As per Dr Winston, your assertion is meaningless. You can't prove that any half decent manager would not have had the run we did. Unless that's your definition of a half decent manager i.e. a manager that doesn't have a bad run of results.

Duff will have the support he deserves, like every other manager. If he plays attractive, winning football people will be happy. But winning isn't enough is it. Cooper had us winning but it was often tedious and cowardly - and people complained.

It's a meaningless assertion though, isn't it. You can't prove it and no-one can disprove it.

What are your expectations for this season? What would be a good/bad season?

Me too. However, you'll no doubt have read on this very forum last season that the "experts" were saying that any half-decent manager should be able to get this team into the playoffs. I guess we'll see whether Duff is half-decent or not.

I've stopped the subscription now. I never thought for one minute they'd take a monthly subscription after the season had finished, and knowing there were no games in the next month.

Oh well, life lesson I suppose.

Hmmm. I can understand that during the season - games might be postponed due to bad weather, for example. But the last possible game would have been the play-off final and this payment covers the month after that.
