Well unless you are over 100 and as sharp as a tin tac does anyone have any passed on memories of what our greatest ever goalscorer was like as a player? Apart from score a ton of goals for us.
I know we speak of Stan & Rodney with the highest regards but they don't have the goalscoring record like George has.

I'd be interested to hear anything about him. My Uncle was a QPR fan and in the very early 80's he told me his sister was married to George Goddard and in fact he got me a signed bit of paper from him that I used to have on my wall. He raved about George Goddard as a player but I can't remember any detail I'm afraid. My uncle (he was in his 70's I think) also said that his dad had both played for and managed (coached?) QPR . My uncles surname was Bowman and I wasn't able to find anyone of that name on the list of QPR managers but I can't imagine my uncle making something like that up.

John Bowman both played for and managed the club. He signed from Stoke in 1901 and played 103 games before becoming Manager of Norwich in 1905.
He returned to our club during WW1 as a Director then succeeded Bob Hewison as Manager in 1931 before stepping down due to poor health later that year.

Thank you very much for that really interesting (and thank you too Trellick) and great to find out a lot more than I knew. It just shows that I shouldn't rely on Wikipedia. Wish I'd talked to my uncle about it more I bet he had some stories.
I'm going to try and find that bit of paper and get it framed or something - he wrote the number of goals he scored and years at Rangers. When I was a kid I thought he must have been related to Paul Goddard !

I wouldn't trust a site that told me Jimmy Andrews managed QPR from 1st August 1965 to 31st July 1965, that equals minus one day and makes Leroy Rosenior's 10 minutes at Torquay seem like a long service medal contender!
My sources say that Bob Hewison left the club in March 1931 and John Bowman reigned from April to November 1931. The new Manager bounce working even then as he won 5 on the spin and 6 of the 7 games to the end of the season.
Unfortunately he couldn't maintain that momentum and we only won 1 of our first 13 games of the 1931/32 season, which is when he suddenly resigned and Archie Mitchell stepped up from his coaching role to take control. The new Manager bounce worked even more effectively then as he won all of his first 8 games in charge whilst overseeing the move to the White City ground for the first time. | | | |

It's an odd gap in Gordon Macey's complete record this one. It says Hewinson left the club in the summer of 1931 and later took over at Bristol Rovers in March 1932. There's no section for John Bowman, it goes straight onto Archie Mitrchell but does say "John Bowman was the original choice to take over from Hewinson. Bowman was QPR director at the time when the move to White City was being prepared and was appointed manager in the summer of 1931 but as forced to step down through illness before the season had begun."

Probably dependent on which Gordon Macey publication you own, Clive. Mine is the 2009 version and includes a section on John Bowman that ends with, ''he died in Sudbury in January 1943''.
As for George Goddard, he must of been a bit of an oddity in those days as he played under four different Managers (Hewison, Bowman, Mitchell and O'Brien) during his time at the club. | | | |

I can’t tell you what George was like as a player but my grandad was great friends with Uncle George and Auntie Elsie. I’m assuming Elsie is Elsie Bowman as I’ve read that George married John Bowman’s daughter. I had no idea that ‘Uncle George’ had been a footballer until my dad told me a few years ago. Sadly my grandad and George had passed away by then so I was never able to ask more. We used to go round to George and Elsie for tea on a Sunday. I was only a little girl but remember that tea was always served in proper china cups and saucers. Auntie Elsie was a lovely and kind lady and always wore her hair in a chignon. Absolutely nothing to do with football but a nice memory to have 😊 [Post edited 16 Apr 16:12]
