I'm always wary of this type of thing. We hear this a lot in Scotland that a big English club will be having a special relationship with Hibs (for example) as they've a couple of good youngsters but couple of years later it's Hearts, then it's Motherwell etc etc. Basically these clubs unearth good talent periodically and it's not just centred with one. A club like QPR should be active as much as they can across the area as picking up young raw talent is financially crucial.
Using Scotland as an example there seems to a huge physical disparity so it's identifying the real talent early and then getting them physically prepared for the Championship, I would imagine Ireland is at least similar to this. If you centred on one club I don't think this would particularly work.
Only potential way it would work would be to use a club as your centre in that country and took youth players from other areas into it to control their development, sure there must be regulations about moving kids around like that though? |  | | |

It's actually a part of football that makes me lose a little love for it as it gets more and more ingrained in the standard process.
I followed a young lad, Gary Mackay Steven, due to playing against the club and hearing about him talking in the pub with Wick players afterwards. .
His path was; (ages are approximate)
Youth/boys footballer at Wick Academy, picked up by Ross County 14yr old, signed by Liverpool 16yr, Fulham 18yr and then released at 20. Never played a game of football at first team level, partly to do with injuries I think.
After being released he got signed by part timers Airdrie and after a short spell there snapped up by Dundee United where his career took off and added Celtic and Aberdeen as well as Scotland caps to his record.
Ultimately did he waste 4 or 5 years shunting around academies when ultimately it was his 20 games at Airdrie that started his career?
He obviously made money at Liverpool and Fulham but its sad there's more money there than getting on the field and playing football.
I want QPR to get good young talent but also sad if there's countless kids moving around the country, Thurso to Fulham is basically as far as you can go, ultimately for no end result. | | | |

Completely agree.
Kids don't stop being kids just because they are good at football. The idea of my kids moving home three times between 14 and 18 would disturb me, though I can understand how hard it must be to stand in the way of what seems to be their career - but as your example shows, usually it's a dead end.
Moving at say 14 to stay with one club with good pastoral care until at least 18 would be a bit different. | | | |
