Wondering if anyone has some sage advice on what to do with my late 2012 iMac/piece of shit.
It's actually been great until now, but I got a Mac mini 2 a couple of weeks ago. To prepare for swapping things over I updated the OS on the iMac to Mojave and then migrated all my apps to the new computer using the migration assistant thing.
I then went back to try to move all the other files (2TB worth of photos etc) from the iMac to an external ssd and its been a disaster for the last week. I've tried everything I can in the recovery options short of using time machine to revert to an earlier state (my time machine backup drive isn't working - good timing).
Have reinstalled the operating system twice now, and afterwards it starts to transfer the files at a normal speed (to the external ssd) but then very quickly slows down to '2 days remaining' sort of speeds. I left it like that all day yesterday, and it was making very slow but steady progress, but came back to it this morning and it had crashed, temporarily damaging the not cheap 4TB ssd (managed to fix it using the disk utility on the new computer).
Have also tried transferring over wifi - glacially slow, I suppose because it was still relying on the iMac - and now I'm reluctant to get the new machine involved in case I fcuk up both of them - having seen what happened to the ssd.
Any ideas much appreciated. One thought is to just get a 4TB non-SSD drive and have another go at transferring, but I'm guessing I may need to take it to an expert and pay to get the files off at this point - if that's even possible. |  | | |  |

I’m going through something similar at the moment. Apparently my 2010 Mac Pro can’t be updated past High Sierra (os 10.13) without upgrading the graphics card which I can’t really be bothered with. I bought a mac mini a couple of months ago to replace it so transitioning to it gradually. It’s all a bit of a pita.
Have you tried copying the files over bit by bit rather than all at once? It might be that it’s struggling with a small section of your drive. Otherwise you might have to try removing the drive (not easy on imac) and using an external drive dock. [Post edited 19 Apr 2023 10:50]

I'd be interested to know if any the suggestions work, as I'm still using my 2011 Macbook pro. It still works very well - I had an SSD installed a few years ago - but I have avoided updating the OS after Sierra because I don't want things to stop working. |  |

Yeah I think copying certain files might be the next attempt Cate - if I can get it to update and turn on again (currently frozen). It's running so slowly it's hard to view them though - might have to try going by date of the photos.

Thanks. I've tried most of those ways. Haven't used that dubiously named 'iBoysoft' programme - do you know if it's any good?
Again though it looks like it may be relying on the old iMac to transfer the files - but they're not lost as such, just can't get them off. | | | |

So when setting up my new Mac mini part of the set up give me the option to migrate everything from my old iMac to the Mac mini using the Time Machine back up. It took no effort and no time at all

I'd been doing back-ups with it every month or so, but that external started smoking last week when I plugged it in. What a world. | | | |
