This team....a ray of hope! 09:12 - Oct 26 with 1884 viewsPhilothesuperhoop

I love Gareth Ainsworth, love his passion, love this playing style, and love his eccentricites...but what has become painfully obvious is that he isn't a modern, tactically aware manager fit for this level.

I know that we have NO strength in depth, but the team below is solid and has some quality. It is a mid table Championship side - it certainly isn't one that should be told to just try and hold onto the coat tails of the likes of Huddersfield or West Brom. We seem to go into games like we are Yeovil playing away at Liverpool.

Begovic
Cannon, Jake Clark Salter, Cook, Paal
Field, Colback
Dozzell
Chair, Willock
Dykes

West Brom this week was a new low. What was our game plan?  At one point we had a throw-in deep in their half - we threw it backwards, then passed it twice backwards to Begovic and he then kicked it long (as he has clearly been told to every time) and we lost the ball. Heaven help us all!

I'm sorry, but that is completely unforgivable.  We have zero attacking threat, and that isn't just down to the quality of the players...it is simply what they've been asked to do. Dykes won't score 15+ goals a season, ever, but he is going to score zero with the lack of build-up play and service he has at the moment.

My guess for Saturday is that we are going to be a victim of the dreaded brackets on the vidi-printer; 0-9 (nine).  But at least that will be the end of this madness and Ainsworth will be gone.

I am 'Phil the Optimist'....so my only ray of hope is that Gareth has at least got these players all on-side and playing for the club, so when we get a manager in who knows what he is doing we may be able to get enough points from 30 games to keep us up.....but then again I might be mad!

Saturday is just something we need to get through to get to the promised land, please find your own way to face it...I am going to take on board a gallon of London Pride before kick-off myself! Hopefully that will do the trick.

Our best hope is Leicester putting the cue on the rack once a couple ahead and saving some of their players for tougher assignments.

Of course if roles were reversed and we were in Leicester's shoes, we would definitely lose this game.

The wrong sort of 'hope' maybe, but, last night, with a Wednesday-supporting friend, I was at Plymouth Argyle v Sheffield Wednesday - two teams also at the wrong end of the table.

The 'hope' is that I saw no particularly impressive football, nor anything superior to what Rangers achieve in their (albeit limited) better periods of play. What I did see so though, was Wednesday, the bottom team, controlling the first half comfortably (without being much of a threat) and then, just before half-time a) conceding a silly free kick on the edge of the area (1-0) and b) make a silly, unforced defensive error (2-0). A further defensive error in the second half (3-0) wrapped it all up.

Conclusion? Not every team is like Leicester City and raising our game just a few percentage points would probably make a huge difference.

How can we do that, Gareth?

For Plymouth’s second I’m not sure I’d be confident of any of our forwards taking that chance like Whittaker did. Only Paul Smyth maybe. That’s the diffence between mid-table and relegation struggles for me. Dykes is missing that 5 times out of 6. Armstrong probably misses but maybe will be putting those away in 2 years time.

I'm a little confused.

You state that you love GA's playing style & then say that his choice of system at West Bromich was absymal. A slight contradiction?

There is still a looooong way to go this season. 33 games. However, to reach the magical 50 points we are going to need to be getting 1.25 points per game, that means 5 points every 4 games. It's doable but we need luck with injuries and someone that can set a team up.

Whilst we are playing around with dream starting 11s

Begovic
Cannon JCS Cook Paal
Colback Field Dozell
Chair
Dykes. Smyth/Armstrong

If everyone is fit I'd like to see us do that. Stodge up the middle with pace alongside Dykes. Chair in the middle to influence the game

Yeah you lost me at 'love this playing style'.

I don't know how anyone could say that having witnessed the last 5 games.

I meant his personal playing style when he turned out for us in the hoops...not the style he gets his teams playing!

I'm guessing but I think the original poster means Ainsworth's playing style * as a player *.

"Things had started becoming increasingly desperate at Loftus Road but QPR have been handed a massive lifeline and the place has absolutely erupted. it's carnage. It's bedlam. It's 1-1."
